- An analysis of the free software PSPP from a researcher’s perspectivePublication . Costa, Juliana; Gonçalves, VítorStatistical software is present in the daily lives of companies/organizations and higher education institutions in contemporary times, making it necessary to train higher education students in its use. One of the biggest constraints on using statistical software in the teaching context is the high cost of proprietary software licenses, so it is necessary to look for alternatives that allow statistical analysis to be worked on in the classroom. This case study aims to present the free software PSPP as an alternative to be explored in teaching. Through the use experience of a student in the master’s program in ICT in Education and Training at the Bragança School of Education in 2024, the study presents the main features of PSPP and the student’s considerations about its use compared to SPSS. The study addresses the user’s vision, demonstrating that PSPP is a good alternative, mainly for use within the classroom context.
- Artificial Intelligence in Education: Challenges and Opportunities for Pedagogical AwarenessPublication . Martins, Cláudia; Paulauskaitė-Tarasevičienė, Agne; Sierra, Carles; Portela, FilipeThis article examines the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, drawing on a roundtable discussion among experts in the field. The conversation, moderated by Cláudia Martins, was structured around three guiding questions: critical, relational, and ethical awareness. The article addresses the crucial distinction, raised by Agnė Paulauskaitė-Tarasevičienė, between general AI and generative AI, such as ChatGPT, which is the current primary concern in the education sector. The experts argue that AI should be viewed as a partner for teachers, rather than a replacement, emphasising that human supervision is crucial in high-risk areas, such as student assessment. The article details the challenges and opportunities in the educational context, covering topics such as curriculum design, detection of learning difficulties, and the risk of AI ”hallucinations”. The discussion also highlights distinct points of view, such as that of Carles Sierra, who argues that the use of AI varies across different academic areas. The participation of Filipe Portela is also acknowledged. The article concludes that the successful integration of AI into education requires both teachers and students to understand and use these tools consciously and intentionally, thereby increasing student autonomy and agency.
- Artificial intelligence in teacher training: benefits, challenges and toolsPublication . Gonçalves, Bruno F.The use of artificial intelligence has emerged as an important tool for teacher training, providing new approaches to the development of pedagogical skills, classroom management, and the personalization of teaching. This research aims to identify the most relevant AI tools for teacher training and to examine the benefits and challenges of integrating AI into teacher training, with a focus on the advantages of personalizing teaching and the difficulties associated with adopting new technologies in the educational context. The methodology used is a literature review, in which studies, scientific articles, and reports on the application of AI in teacher training are analyzed to identify the technological tools available for teaching. The results suggest that AI has enormous potential to transform teacher training, offering tools that make it possible to personalize the training process, adapting it to teachers' needs and learning styles. However, the implementation of these tools faces challenges such as the need for ongoing teacher training, resistance to adopting new technologies, and the lack of technological infrastructure in some educational institutions.
- Continuing training and professional development of teachers at higher education schools in Guinea-Bissau: expectations and training evaluationPublication . Rodrigues, Maria José; Dias, Filipe; N'Luta EugénioTeacher training, for any level of education, according to educational research carried out at the international level, is one of the pillars for the development of any country's educational system. In this sense, it is necessary to guarantee these professionals quality training, of a multidisciplinary nature in the most diverse dimensions of knowledge, which, in turn, requires qualified staff in Higher Education Schools (ESE) and other training institutions. This work aims to understand the expectations and how teachers evaluate the training course “Research in education – investigative dimension and professional development of teachers” offered to 16 teachers from four ESEs in Guinea-Bissau. This way it will be possible to envisage other training, outline priorities and make recommendations for the training of ESE teachers in Guinea-Bissau. This is a qualitative work, with descriptive and interpretative characteristics. To collect data, we used two questionnaires, one applied at the beginning of the course and another at the end, the answers were subject to content analysis. It should be noted that the participants had high expectations regarding the course, highlighting the relevance of the theme for their practices. On the other hand, they emphasized the need to update and deepen their knowledge. At the time of evaluation, the trainees were unanimous in recognizing the importance of training for their professional development, however, they pointed out some constraints such as the lack of resources, time and the low level of digital skills. They suggested more training so that the topic can be deepened and so that they can appropriate knowledge for their practices, as teachers and researchers. To conclude, the need to adapt the ongoing training offered according to the specificities of work contexts, in this case in Guinea-Bissau, is corroborated, and it responds to the real needs of the different educational agents, taking into account the challenges faced and contributing to the production of praxeological knowledge.
- Corpus Linguistics and the Identification of Linguistic Patterns and Meanings: Insights from Learners’ Practices – An Exploratory StudyPublication . Aguiar, JoanaThis paper explores the potential applications of corpus linguistics in English Language Teaching (ELT), specifically in resolving collocations and identifying instances of semantic change. The application of corpus linguistics to language learning has been proven to be successful and to have a positive impact on L2 students. Corpus analysis also draws attention to words or phrases that students might not have accessed via intuition or direct grammatical transposition from L1 [1]. Prior research has identified the use of collocations as a strong indicator of L2 proficiency [2]. In order to assess which online resource best suits students’ needs when using a specific collocation or structure, while simultaneously helping them write and speak English more naturally, students were asked to resort to online resources to complete five tasks. The five online resources/platforms used were: Cambridge Learner’s Dictionary [3], OZDIC [4], SKELL [5], UrbanDictionary [6], and the British National Corpus website [7]. Students also evaluated which platform was more efficient in problem resolution. Results show that students tend to rely more on traditional online dictionaries despite the task. Overall, the activities involving corpus linguistics are evaluated very positively, as students are given the opportunity to explore online resources autonomously and integrate explicit knowledge through hands-on experience rather than memorisation.

- Digital tools in active learning activities: motivating and engaging higher education studentsPublication . Coelho, Ana Sofia; Pires, Raquel; Martins, Oliva M.D.Today's higher education system faces enormous challenges. Students in general have very particular characteristics that make the teaching-learning process very difficult, such as being very dependent on technology, lacking motivation for expositive teaching, and lacking attention for various reasons and for certain periods. Additionally, the teacher needs to develop the student's skills for the future profession, and at the same time teacher needs to adapt the content of the course to professional practice. In this context, the following question arises: how can teachers engage and attract students' interest and motivation for learning in the classroom in higher education at the same time that articulates both content and skills to the profession? To engage and motivate the students´ participation in the learning process, several active learning strategies using digital technology were introduced in the Organizational Communication course, with the students of Multimedia Bachelor at Bragança Polytechnic University. The students used free online tools such as Mentimeter, Jamboard and Google Slides. They also used computers and mobile phones. The active learning activities were accomplished individually and collaboratively during short and long periods of time. It also used interactive video. The result of this pedagogical activity was very interesting. Students were very motivated and committed by the learning process in the different moments of the class. All students participated individually and collaboratively in groups of three or four students. The time for activities were controlled by a timer. At first, the students didn't feel very comfortable with the time required to complete the activity, but at the end of the activity, they realized they were able to complete the activity within the classroom period and that it reflects learning in a professional environment. Some important workplace skills were developed, such as critical thinking and problem-solving, teamwork, oral and written communication, listening, and observing.
