Resumo(s)

The diversity of the global world generates dynamics that pose chal-lenges for individuals and communities. In a democratic society, it is essential to be committed to human rights and to ensure respect for social justice. Education in general, and schools in particular, play a key role in developing skills that make citi-zens more participatory and aware of their actions in the world around them. Based on international guidelines on the principles of Education for Development and Global Citizenship (EDGC), Portugal has taken up the issue of education for citizenship as an explicit concern in the educational context, seeking to implement it in schools. This research aims to analyze, in a descriptive way, the presence of indicators related to EDGC in the Portuguese School Educational Projects (SEP), and also to analyze the potential of EDGC in the daily lives of students and in their future. This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study of four school groupings in the Terras de Trás-os-Montes Intermunicipal Community (Portugal). Using the content anal-ysis technique, four categories/dimensions were defined: ethical; political; collective (and interpersonal and inter-institutional relations); and alterity. There is a concern to achieve an education that promotes values, but it is considered that democracy will only be achieved indirectly, through the development of skills associated with the practice of citizenship. There is also a discrepancy between the evidence of EDGC present in the guiding principles and objectives and its limited expression in the strategies and targets, concluding that these concepts are not worked on effectively and intentionally during the implementation of the SEP. It is therefore recommended that EDGC be implemented at all levels of education, including higher education, as a way of encouraging practices that promote respect for diversity and equity in the construction of a democratic and just society.
