  • Knowledge management and spirituality in higher education institutions: a new challenge
Publication . Neves, Carla C.T.; Marchant-Pérez, Paula F.; Pinheiro, Paulo
Based on the existing definitions in the literature on knowledge management and spirituality for other organizations, this study aims to reflect on how Higher Edu-cation Institutions (HEIs) face issues related to knowledge management and spirituality in the workplace. A qualitative methodology was used to achieve the goal with data collected from interviews with higher education teachers. The conclusion shows that, although most interviewees perceive the HEIs’ mission, vision and values, these were not explicitly disseminated. In terms of knowledge management, the organizational culture of HEIs should promote the appreciation and recognition of tacit knowledge about corporate spirituality; there is a long way to go in HEIs as a whole. This work aims to present a transparent interconnection between knowledge management and spirituality in the workplace and, through the integration of research carried out by other authors on this matter, offer a sustained analysis of the data. Also, this study implies implications at a strategic management level of HEIs since management should promote more practical knowledge management and develop practices that contribute to a workplace guided by spiritual values, always considering gains in productivity and competitiveness.
  • Destination image through TripAdvisor’s reviews analysis
Publication . Scalabrini, E.C.B.; Ferreira, Jessica; Zekan, Senka Borovac; Fernandes, Paula Odete
Tourists’ satisfaction and motivation have been recurrent themes in tourism literature. In recent years these themes have also been addressed based on online evaluations carried out by tourists, TripAdvisor is one of the most used sites. In this context, this study aims to analyse the image of Bragança’s tourism destina- tion based on TripAdvisor reviews during the pandemic period (2020–2022). To this end, 1444 quantitative and qualitative reviews of attractions, hotels, and restaurants in Bragança, Northern Portugal, were analysed. Based on the Latent Dirichlet Allo- cation Algorithm three dimensions were determined for the attractions, two dimen- sions for the hotels and two dimensions for the restaurants. The descriptive statistics made it possible to establish that the municipality has a positive tourist image. Given results, theoretical and practical implications of this important Marketing theme are presented.
  • Influence amplified: leveraging the power of influencer marketing in the digital age
Publication . Zekan, Senka Borovac; Fernandes, Paula Odete; Borowska-Pietrzak, A.; Biličić, Slavica Galić
This chapter will unravel the intricacies of influencer marketing, from its origins to its contemporary significance. Through a meticulously crafted case study, the readers will get the practical implementation of influencer marketing, illustrating how a retail clothing brand leveraged the influence of digital personalities to amplify its reach and resonance. The case study explores the use of influencers and event promotion through social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The study delves into who influencers are, why and how much people trust them, and how they promote products and services. Using the example of announcing the opening of the Reserved store in Zadar, Croatia, the study analyses the influence of the online campaigns #ReservedforZadar and #Reservedforme on customers to visit and purchasing products from the Reserved store. An interview was conducted with the main organiser, who also holds the CEO position within the prominent LPP Group.
  • What do #storytelling and #marketing have in common? A comprehensive literature review from the Web of Science
Publication . Marques, Henrique; Almeida, João Paulo; Bastos, Adriana; Martins, Oliva M.D.
Storytelling is a powerful marketing tool that can be used to attract the audience's attention and influence behavior. However, this investigation seeks to understand more deeply the importance of written narratives in the marketing field. In this sense, the objective of this article is to explore similarities and identify patterns, phases or stages, variables, indicators, and respective relationships (models) to help marketers to create storytelling. In the analogy of the visual methodology analytical process, this literature review created a selection of the sample and developed content to struc-ture storytelling within the marketing framework. Through the analysis of 78 papers published in the Web of Science main collection, this research finds out three clus-ters: marketing cluster, content cluster, and context cluster. Our results indicate that, in marketing, storytelling elicits brand identification, awareness, and customer en-gagement, as well as it helps with self-expression, a sense of belonging, and a percep-tion of the value of the product or brand. We find some variables, indicators, and respective relationships (models) that can be used in storytelling in the marketing field to improve value awareness. This review also allowed us to identify factors re-lated to the structuring of marketing storytelling. And we found three key elements of the story construct that are transversal: content, classification, and character.
  • Outdoor solutions for the seasonal concentration of tourism demand in northern Portugal: an Integrated approach based on the gini index
Publication . Fernandes, Paula Odete; Santos, Eleonora; Nunes, Alcina; Ferrreira, Fernanda A.; Veloso, Cláudia M.; Fonseca, Manuel José
Measures that address the seasonality, one of the identified overtourism direct causes, allow making a critical reflection on the application of control policies and monitoring regional measures crucial on a sector with such importance at the regional development analysis. The measures should stimulate or reduce tourism demand during low or peak seasons, respectively, generating a better distribution of tourism flows and eliminating potential overtourism situations. Therefore, this chapter focuses on the development of a Gini Index to analyse the distribution of the seasonality in northern Portugal and through it control current public measures in practice and suggest the implementation of different and more effective policy measures. For instance, the ones that make a clear bet on outdoor tourism activities. It will be used in the Gini Index, by the tourists’ market of origin measured by the overnight stays in hotel establishments. The results showed the high seasonal concentration of tourist flows.
  • Path generation, control, and monitoring
Publication . Faria, Carlos; Martins, Daniela A.L.; Matos, Marina A.; Pinho, Diana; Ramos, Bruna; Bicho, Estela; Costa, Lino; Espirito Santo, Isabel; Fonseca, Jaime; Monteiro, M. Teresa T.; Pereira, Ana I.; Rocha, Ana Maria A.C.; Vaz, A. Ismael F.
A critical issue in additive manufacturing (AM) is the control of the printer actuators such that the deposition of material (or a few different materials) takes place in an organized way. Typically, the actuators are connected with a low-level controller that can receive computer numerical control (CNC) instruction. A 3D printer controller is, usually, expected to receive a set of CNC instructions in a format called G-Code, where a set of control instructions is provided. These instructions include the necessary settings for the printer to work (e.g., a temperature setup) and printer head movement instructions (e.g., the x-, y-, and z- positions in reference axes). The set of the printer actuators positions, where some operations take place, is called the printer path. Path planning or generation corresponds to the computation of the printer head trajectory during a period of time where the object is to be built. A five-degree of freedom/5-axis 3D printer that considers a hybrid process based on additive manufacturing of composites with long or short fibers reinforced thermoplastic matrix is being addressed in this book.
  • Build orientation optimization of car hoodvent with additive manufacturing
Publication . Matos, Marina A.; Rocha, Ana Maria A.C.; Costa, Lino; Pereira, Ana I.
Additive manufacturing is a widely used process consisting in the building of a three-dimensional (3D) object from a model projected on a computer, adding the material layer-by-layer. This technology allows the printing of complex shape objects and is being increasingly adopted by the aircraft industry, medical implants, jewelry, footwear, automotive, fashion products, among others. The build orientation optimization of 3D models has a great influence on costs and surface quality when printing three-dimensional objects. In this work, three build orientation optimization problems are studied: single objective problem, bi-objective problem and many-objective problem. To this end, three quality measures are applied: the support area, the build time and the surface roughness, for the Car Hoodvent model. First, a single-objective optimization problem is presented and solved by the genetic algorithm, obtaining optimal solutions for each objective function. Then, the study of the bi-objective optimization problem is carried out for each pair of two objectives and some representative trade-off solutions are identified. Finally, the study of the many objective optimization problem, considering the three measures optimized simultaneously, is presented with some more optimal solutions found. The bi-objective and many-objective problems are solved by a multi-objective genetic algorithm. For a better analysis and comparison of the solutions found, the Pareto fronts are used, enabling a better visualization of the solutions between the objectives. This study aims to assist the decision-maker in choosing the best part print orientation angles according to his/her preferences. The optimal solutions found confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
  • Model predictive control in greenhouses
Publication . Coelho, João Paulo; Boaventura-Cunha, José
It is a somewhat general consensus that the agricultural production process has begun over 12,000 years ago somewhere in the Middle East region. The development of this activity can be explained in several ways, but all boils down to the necessity of hunter-gatherer-based humans to reduce their dependence on the whims of nature. Having control of the food chain was, and still is, one of the characteristics that made our species strive, flourish, and spread across the globe.
