- Editorial for Special Issue: tourism forecasting: time-series analysis of world and regional dataPublication . Teixeira, João Paulo; Gunter, UlrichThis Special Issue was honored with six contribution papers embracing the subject of tourism forecasting. The papers focused on forecasting tourism demand in the USA, Vienna—Austria, Vietnam, Marrakech-Safi region of Morocco, Dubai, and China. The time series were spread from tourism interest in the USA, hotel room demand in Vienna, number of tourists in Vietnam, annual tourist arrivals to the Marrakech-Safi region of Morocco, tourist arrivals to Dubai from the UK and the daily and weekly number of passengers at urban rail transit stations in China. The used datasets, in some cases, included thepandemic period, which was a severe challenge for the forecasting models. The forecasting models used embrace the following parameters: descriptive analysis techniques, seasonal naïve, Error Trend Seasonal (ETS), Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA), Trigonometric Seasonality, Box–Cox Transformation, ARMA Errors, Trend and Seasonal Components (TBATS), Seasonal Neural Network Autoregression (Seasonal NNAR), Seasonal NNAR with an external regressor, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) forecasting model, ARIMA, AR, linear regression, Support Vector Regression (SVR), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models, ensemble models, Box–Jenkins time series models, and the Facebook Prophet algorithm.
- Editorial: advances in machine learning approaches and technologies for supporting nervous system disease diagnosisPublication . As it can unfortunately be affected by several progressive diseases, an early diagnosis is often critical for effective treatment (Xu et al., 2022). The diagnosis of nervous system diseases traditionally relies on a combination of clinical examination, imaging and signals tests, and laboratory tests (Siuly and Zhang, 2016). However, these methods can be time-consuming, expensive, and not always accurate (Milligan, 2019). In an era marked by unprecedented technological advances in machine learning (ML), a computational tool that allows the identification of patterns in data that would be difficult or even impossible for humans, its application to assist in medical diagnosis emerges as a beacon of hope in the complex panorama of nervous system diseases. The Research Topic Advances in machine learning approaches and technologies for supporting nervous system disease diagnosis aims to shed light on the transformative role that ML-based approaches and technologies are playing in reshaping the way an ensemble of nervous system disorders are understood, diagnosed, and treated.

Robotics, as a formidable educational tool, goes beyond theoretical learning by immersing students in practical projects that demand problem-solving skills. Its inherently multidisciplinary nature encourages the integration of knowledge from traditionally distinct disciplines, enriching the educational experience. In the ever-evolving landscape of STEM education, the integration of robotics has proven to be a dynamic catalyst for inspiring students and advancing research in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The latest strides in this interdisciplinary field are encapsulated in four articles published in the Research Topic on Educational Robotics and Competitions. These articles shed light on diverse aspects of robotics challenges, from virtual and real-world competitions to classroom applications.
- Editorial: health financing and spending in low- and middle-income countriesPublication . Jakovljevic, Mihajlo; Çalışkan, Zafer; Fernandes, Paula Odete; Mouselli, Sulaiman; Otim, Michael EkubuThe World Bank has introduced the Atlas method to determine in an econometrically valid way borderline thresholds for classifications of all national economies into low, middle, and high-income categories in an objective and predictable manner. Although this approach may be challenged to some extent, it has long served well in observation and predictions of long-term trends in GDP growth and national health expenditures (1–3). The contribution of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) share in total health expenditures as observed through the (4) Global Health Expenditure criteria has almost doubled in terms of purchase power parity (PPP) basis from only 20% of the global share in 1995 up to almost 40% in 2013 (5, 6). These fiscal flows have been well-documented via WHO’s National Health Accounts database. This lengthy and rocky road forward for the LMICs contains many difficulties. A few core challenges include socioeconomic inequalities in medical care access and affordability, large out-of-pocket expenses, and vulnerabilities against catastrophic household expenditures. These challenges remain matters of grave concern in many LMICs (7). Broad trends give far greater grounds for optimism, however, since networks of rural and suburban health care facilities are growing and strengthening. Preventive lifestyle interventions, provision of essential medicines, and spreading of cost-effective basic medical technologies, designated in WHO policy as “best buys” interventions, all contributed to exceptionally improved early childhood survival and extended life expectancy. Current circumstances in most LMICs are characterized by aging populations, rapid urbanization, and increased citizen expectations in terms of health insurance coverage. Prescription drugs consumption is still dominated by generic medicines, with brand name originals gradually taking root. Hospital sectors are state or publicly owned in most former and modern day centrally-planned socialist economies. By contrast, in some regions like the Middle East and North African (MENA) Arabic nations, Latin America, and free-market Far East Asian economies, hospital property structure is predominantly privately owned (1).

The main objective of SOHOMA workshops is to foster innovation in smart and sustainable manufacturing and logistics systems and in this context to promote concepts, methods and solutions for the digital transformation of manufacturing through service orientation and agent-based control with distributed intelligence. The theme of the SOHOMA’21 Workshop is “Convergence of factory asset and process lifecycle with product lifecycles in Cyber-Physical System-based production”.

Almeida, João P.; Relvas, Susana; Oliveira, José F.; Pinto, Alberto A.In 2019, APDIO has organized the twentieth Portuguese national conference of Operational Research (OR)—the IO series. With this long-lasting list of events, success has been the main takeaway from each unique occurrence. With a growing number of members, also with growing enthusiasm, the conference series has reached most regions in themainland country.Recently, the frequency of the conference was increased, while maintaining the same attendance and quality of work. Outreach of the conference to OR researchers from different nationalities is also increasing and bringing an international feel to the events. Year after year, keynote speakers from industry and from other European societies have joined us to share knowledge and current research and practice of OR. Our national OR discussion forum has influenced, as well, a growing number of national members attending and presenting in international OR conferences and participating actively in EURO Working Groups. However, besides validating our OR research, our national conferences always promote a very strong, very Portuguese social occasion. A true networking event is where work and social well-being are sustained—and looked forward—event after event. With this book as the last physical milestone of IO2019, we perpetuate the results from this event and invite all our members,

Almeida, João P.; Geraldes, Carla A.S.; Lopes, Cristina; Moniz, Samuel; Oliveira, José F.; Pinto, Alberto A.The XXI Congress of APDIO, the Portuguese Operational Research Society, took place on 7 and 8 November 2021, with more than 120 registered participants and around 80 papers submitted. This congress took place at a very particular historical moment. After the first waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had immobilized humanity, cancelling all gatherings, society was equipped with the first effective weapons against the pandemic, in particular vaccines, and the world was beginning to reopen. Science, in all its facets, had been massively called upon for this on a scale that humanity had never before experienced. It was in this context of hope that the APDIO congress took place, also celebrating the significant contribution of this discipline in fighting the pandemic. Thus, “Analytics for a BetterWorld” was chosen as the congress theme.

Prieto, Javier; Partida, Alberto; Leitão, Paulo; Pinto, AntónioThe 3rd International Congress on Blockchain and Applications 2021 will be held in Salamanca from 6 to 8 of October. This annual congress will reunite blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) researchers, who will share ideas, projects, lectures, and advances associated with those technologies and their application domains. Among the scientific community, blockchain and AI are seen as a promising combination that will transform the production and manufacturing industry, media, finance, insurance, e-government, etc. Nevertheless, there is no consensus with schemes or best practices that would specify how blockchain and AI should be used together. Combining blockchain mechanisms and artificial intelligence is still a particularly challenging task.

The emergence of artificial intelligence, the emphasis on value co-creation, innovations in vocational education, and the growing focus on inclusive and sustainable tourism are not merely trends—they signal a fundamental shift in how organizations operate, engage with stakeholders, and define strategic priorities. These shifts demand more than technical adaptation; they require a rethinking of business models, communication practices, and the role of data and analytics in decision-making (Cosa, 2024; Dutt et al., 2024; Omol, 2024). This Special Issue of the International Journal of Marketing, Communication and New Media, titled “Transformative Insights for Marketing and Communication in the Digital Era,” brings together thirteen peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the fifth edition of the International Conference on Applied Business and Management (ICABM2024). The conference was held on 20 and 21 June 2024 at ISAG – European Business School, in collaboration with the Research Center in Business Sciences and Tourism (CICET-FCVC) of Consuelo Vieira da Costa Foundation. With 85 presentations delivered by national and international researchers from over 18 countries— including Algeria, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Spain, France, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam— ICABM2024 provided a dynamic forum for critical dialogue and applied research across the fields of business, management, tourism, marketing, and innovation. The thirteen articles featured in this Special Issue reflect the diversity of themes, methodological approaches, and practical implications that defined the conference. Collectively, these contributions explore the transformative impact of digitalisation on consumer engagement, branding strategies, stakeholder communication, and sustainable development. In particular, the role of artificial intelligence in generating deep consumer insights and supporting data-driven marketing strategies is examined as a critical frontier for innovation and competitiveness (Rupigaa and Syahputra, 2025). In the editorial that follows, we outline the thematic structure of the selected papers and highlight their relevance for advancing contemporary debates in marketing and communication within the digital era.
