Abstract(s)
Physical competence is an essential factor for the development of children, actively relating to the determination to practice physical activity. The objective of the present study was to characterize the perception of physical competence of children in pre-school education and students in the 1st cycle of basic education (CBE), by gender and school year (pre-school, 1st and 2nd year of CBE). The methodology used to characterize physical competence was based on the application of the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Children (Harter & Pike, 1984; Mata, Monteiro & Peixoto, 2008). The sample consisted of 19 children in pre-school education and 16 children in the 1st CBE. Regarding the results, good levels of self-perception of motor competence were observed, both in pre-school children (3.26 ± 0.40) and in 1st CBE students (3.33 ± 0.36). The results also point to the lack of significant differences between genders (p=0.554) and between children in pre-school and 1st CBE (p=0.844).
