Abstract(s)
Computational thinking is a skill that improves the ability to reason, organize, and solve problems. It involves processing information at different levels of abstraction and developing structured and creative thinking. Curricular enrichment activities in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education (1st CBE) are optional activities in various fields, from sports to technology, and are essentially recreational, pedagogical, and cultural. This article presents a study carried out in the curricular enrichment activities in the 1st grade of a school grouping in the north of Portugal, with two 4th grade classes, to promote computational thinking and foster transversal competencies in the curriculum with learning activities based on programming. The results show that students developed computational thinking skills, as well as increasing their motivation and involvement in curricular enrichment activities and the use of digital technologies. We, therefore, conclude that curricular enrichment activities in primary school can be interesting spaces for developing fundamental skills in students in a playful and formative way, such as computational, digital, or transversal thinking skills.
