Abstract(s)
Se lhe propusessem o desafio – Olha à tua volta! Onde é que vês matemática? –
If someone presents you the challenge - Look around! Where do you see mathematics? - and invite you to express your vision in photographic form, what aspects would you choose to photograph? That was the challenge launched to the educational community of the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, Portugal, and that gave rise to the photography exhibitions "Mathematics in the city of Bragança", "Mathematics in IPB" and "Mathematics of my country", held respectively in the academic years 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2019/20. In this document, in addition to contextualizing the procedures associated with the events, we present a mathematical route through Terras de Trás-os-Montes, with a particular focus on the city of Bragança, based on a selection of photographs from the various exhibitions. We will also discuss the pedagogical potential of this type of event, both for possible use for classroom tasks and to promote the community's mathematical literacy. It should be not that, in addition to stimulating the creative spirit and communication through images, the exhibitions allow us to highlight the importance of mathematics in the world around us and lead visitors to remember some mathematical concepts. They are, therefore, a way to demystify the idea that "mathematics is only for a few" and to raise awareness of the relevance of talking about mathematics in a completely informal environment, as a subject that can be debated in any circumstance as happens with music, literature and other arts.
