Abstract(s)
This conference focuses on the project Study on Teachers' Beliefs, Knowledge and Practices.
The main objective of this project was to understand the beliefs, knowledge and practices of
teachers and school leaders. The data collection and analysis took both a qualitative and
quantitative approach, using several different instruments: interviews with school leaders
(school grouping directors, department coordinators and class/group leaders), questionnaires
for teachers and analysis of documents provided by the school groupings. In a total of eleven
school groupings, more than 50% of the school leaders belonging to the different bodies of
these groupings and 406 kindergarten educators and primary and secondary school teachers
participated, more than 25% of the total number.
In this conference the emphasis is placed on the recommendations arising from the
articulation of the voices of school leaders and teachers with the perspectives of reference
authors. This summary exemplifies the recommendation: Ensure the academic success of
students and guarantee an inclusive and quality education for all. Thus, based on the
assumption that the fundamental focus of school activity is the development of the curriculum
and learning, it is important to recognize the added value of student diversity, finding ways
to deal with individual and cultural differences. This implies adapting the teaching and
learning processes to the students' characteristics, particularities and individual conditions.
From this study the need emerges to reflect upon the concept of success, considering that
there is not only a single academic success, there are several forms of school success. It is
therefore recommended to ensure and diversify the teaching and learning strategies taking
into account the students' involvement and the creation of conditions for the school to become
a privileged space of Education for Development/Education for Global Citizenship and on
the impact of technologies in human development and its bearing on the teaching and learning
processes. It is also recommended to consider pedagogical evaluation as an integral part of
the teaching and learning process and the design of concrete strategies for mutual
involvement, interaction and communication among school-family-community. For the
relevant recommendation, some effective suggestions are presented for its implementation:
(i) Creation of classrooms where cooperative work enhances respect for individual
differences and rhythms and the spirit of solidary learning is developed; (ii) Collaboration
among schools/groups, family, community, higher education institutions and other partners,
enhancing pedagogical change and innovation; (iii) Continuing to develop projects that allow
students to reflect upon and build a positive view about difference.
