A Unidade Curricular referida é
lecionada no primeiro semestre letivo.
The present work develops a project launched during the academic year of 2018/2019 with the stated goal of creating one academic subject for professional academic profiles (CTESP) aiming at introducing basic academic research to said students, using a set of tools which might be described as disruptive technologies, considering as disruptive these technologies that abide by a fourfold requisite: that they be cheaper, simpler, lighter and more convenient that conventionally accepted ones – this demand having shaped the choice of resources adopted. In a nutshell the aim is to approach the main stages and demands of an academic research project and to explore the computing tools and techniques applicable to the development of each phase. As a prerequisite demand these tools should be easy to use, free (or institutionally freely available) and cross-platform so as to allow unrestricted usage by any student in the institution. This subject is lectured during the first semester of the academic year. In this study we analyze a number of surveys answered by the students of two classes, one from a technological strand and another from a more humanistic area, the only two which were active in the present academic year, when this study was carried out. Also include in the study were a small number of students from other courses who had not yet successfully completed this subject. These surveys, that are described and dully grounded, had as main goals: a) to understand the position of students regarding the interest and implications regarding academically oriented research; b) to understand how the same students positioned themselves regarding the relevance and usage of the tools techniques studied; c) to assess the perceived utility of the tools and techniques studied in connection with the distinct class profiles. Student productions are also analyzed investigating which tools/techniques are actually used and in which way. The cross analysis of these two sources aims at determining if there is any discrepancy between reported interests/utility and actual usage. The coincidence (or its absence) between reported interest/utility and actual usage of knowledge, tools and techniques, will be decisive for an eventual reformulation of the UC’s profile. Considering that this analysis concerns data gathered during the first semester of the present academic year it is, at this moment impossible to present reliable static conclusions but such results will be presented in the completed work.
