Abstract(s)
This study aims to boost the competitiveness of Portuguese beekeeping sector,
particularly, honey production. Thus, it purposes to analyze domestic honey market
annual statistics, from 2005 to 2016, to establish correlations in order to identify
constraints and potentialities. In 2015, honeybee production, at producer prices, exceeded
50 million Euros, evidencing its importance for the generation of value of beekeeping
sector. In 12 years, the value of honey, in production, raised more than five times, due to
the increase in volume and average producer prices, mainly in the sale in bulk. In 2016,
domestic consumption of honey per capita was around 1.3 kg, doubling the value
registered in 2005. This increase affected the supply capacity of the domestic market, and
currently domestic supply of honey is insufficient to respond to domestic demand.
External trade in honey has as its priority partners Community countries, especially Spain and Germany. The comparative analysis of the evolution of the average export and import
price shows the growing appreciation of domestic honey in the foreign market. The results
highlight the importance of the professionalization and diversification of supply, aiming
at boosting farm income and adjusting the national response capacity to the present
demand for bee products.
