Abstract(s)
Within the scope of recent studies on undergraduate research and assuming the tasks of information research and retrieval as a fundamental item of any research process the present analysis intends to shed some light on the research strategies developed by students of the 1st year of a vocational superior degree when locating and selecting information to use in their investigations. To this purpose we use a set of questionnaires proposed to the totality of classes pertaining to the intended universe in the academic years of 2020/21, 2021/22. We briefly describe and justify the whole of the questionnaires used – 6 in all during the course of the subject. following the different stages of a research project (generating the idea, setting up the project, researching and retrieving information, data analysis, conclusions, publication) – and briefly analyze the results gathered. The present analyses is more particularly centered on the data pertaining to the 4th questionnaire specifically centered on the aforementioned strategies used for location and retrieval of information. We separately analyze the date relating to the both considered academic years (regarding the year 20/21 we had a return of about 76% response of a total 41 students and for 21/22 about 86% out of 49 total possible students) which are then compared either considering the different profiles considered (one more technologically oriented another more socially oriented) or considering the different academic years considered. We the attempt to answer the following questions: 1) what sort of sources and research strategies are paramount? 2) which are the major constants one can find across the different vocational profiles?; 3) are there any meaningful differences across the different vocational profiles?; 4) results obtained are consisting across the time frame analyzed and should there be any differences what do they mean? As a very general conclusion we can point to the fact that although as a rule students understand the need to use trustworthy and certified sources they also show a preference to use electronic instead of printed sources and for resorting to popular sources instead of specialized ones. The ultimate goal of this study is thus to sustain the development of strategies empowering the students to maximize the results of their activities of information research and retrieval.
