  • Local tourist taxes in Portugal: A systematic review of municipal regulations
Publication . Carvalho, Luís M.; Pinheiro, Eduardo; Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Costa, Cláudia S.
The economic benefits of tourism activity have led Portuguese municipalities to seek new financial resources that allow them to face new public expenses to mitigate the adverse effects of such growth, creating public policies that incorporate those effects. This research aims to analyse existing municipal tourist tax regulations in Portugal, creating a conceptual framework to compare them. A content analysis of municipal regulations on tourist taxes was carried out through a qualitative approach. A conceptual framework was developed with several variables, including taxpayer incidence and age, total and partial exemptions, maximum charges, collection fees, administrative violations, and economic and financial justification. Afterwards, a review of existing regulations was conducted. Despite the economic benefits derived from tourism activity, there has been a growing concern among public authorities about its significant and rapid growth. The negative externalities are a reality that must be considered when creating and implementing public policies. To the authors’ knowledge, no framework is available to compare municipal regulations related to tourist taxes in Portugal. This research has practical and theoretical implications for researchers and municipalities that have already implemented or are planning to implement such regulations.

  • Padrões de comportamento espaciotemporais dos turistas backpackers no destino urbano do Porto: o método do alinhamento sequencial
Publication .
  • Visitors’ intra-attraction space-time behaviour: a content and bibliometric analysis
Publication . Rodrigues, Isabel; Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Esteves, Elsa Tavares
The aim of the paper is to identify the research trends on visitors’ intra-attraction space-time behaviour in tourism studies, presenting and discussing some theoretical aspects related to concepts, constructs and methodological options expressed in articles related with this topic published in Scopus database. The main contributions to the management of intra-attraction visitors’ space-time behavior are provided. The search carried out in the Scopus platform reveals a growing interest in the visitors’ space-time behavior in tourism studies. The most productive authors, the most relevant journals and the research areas of published articles were identified. With the selected articles a content analysis was performed and the geographic scale of analysis and the methodology used were also identified. However, few articles specifically focus on visitors’ intra-attraction behavior have been published. Keyword co-occurrence analysis allowed the identification of main research topics with focus on distinctive themes, such as “tourism development”, “tourist behavior”, “ecotourism”, “tourist attraction”, "big data" or “social networks”, among others. The main contributions to the attractions management were selected and analysed, such as, to better managing visitor congestion and crowding, reducing waiting times; to the enhancement of the attraction's facilities and the quality of tourist experiences, in particular by implementing measures to improve visitor mobility; and to the segmentation of the target public, promoting personalised products and services, among others.
  • Os movimentos dos visitantes na rota enoturística
Publication . Caldeira, Ana; Kastenholz, Elisabeth; Martins, Márcio Ribeiro
  • Backpackers’ order and visit length in an urban world heritage destination: an analysis using ordered logit and linear models
Publication . Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Mourão, Paulo; Costa, Rui Augusto
Described as a group of independent travelers with flexible itineraries and without substantial time constraints, backpackers constitute one of the tourist segments that has drawn the attention of many researchers around the world. However, little is known about how this segment of travelers behaves in destinations from a space-time perspective. The purpose of this study is to examine the relevance of the order and visit length on backpackers' space-time behavior in an urban world heritage destination. Using geographic information system (GIS) software, the sequence and the length of the visit were identified. To analyze the order of the places visited, we used the ordered logit method and to study the duration dimension a multivariate equation, estimated by OLS with heteroskedasticity robust errors, was selected. The results showed that no variable in particular influences the order of the places visited in any of the parishes simultaneously, reinforcing the underlying randomness in relation to the order in which destination parishes are visited. Length of stay is mostly influenced by factors related to mobility conditions as well as factors exogenous to tourists' decision-making capacity.
  • Tourism versus local public administration: research trends through bibliometric analysis
Publication . Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Costa, Cláudia S.; Costa, Rui
The tourism activity has faced several challenges worldwide and the private sector alone cannot deal with all these challenges, which is why the public administration needs to intervene, including at the local level, in several areas, such as tourism promotion, tourism infrastructure, tourism coordination/planning, tourism information dissemination, among others. This paper aims to analyze the dynamics of tourism research in a local public management perspective by exploring the main topics and areas of action of local governments, through a bibliometric analysis. The main results suggest that most of the selected studies stress the relevance of local governments taking a central role in tourism management, planning and promotion, so that both public and private sectors benefit, and residents do not have to directly face their negative impacts.
  • Tracking technologies in tourism: a bibliometric and content review
Publication . Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Costa, Rui Augusto
Understanding how tourists move within a destination can give an important contribution to the planning and management of destinations, particularly in terms of their impacts. Therefore, studying the spatial and temporal behaviour of tourists, namely their physical movements in space and time, implies resorting to a set of techniques that enable the tracking of their movements. This paper intends to identify the most important tracking technologies on tourism research and its major advantages and disadvantages. Based on a literature review, this study provides a critical review of the most important tracking technologies in tourism research divided into two phases, a quantitative analysis based on the Scopus database and a bibliometric analysis coupled with a manual analysis of documents (content analysis).
  • Exploring the Influence of Social Media on Tourist Decision-Making: Insights from Cape Verde
Publication . Martins, Wilson Semedo; Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Morais, Elisabete Paulo
This study explores the influence of social media on tourists’ decision-making processes, focusing on Cape Verde as an emerging tourist destination. The aim is to understand how social media platforms shape tourists’ perceptions and choices and how demographic factors like age and education affect the selection of information sources. A survey was conducted with 259 individuals intending to visit Cape Verde, employing a non-probability convenience sampling method. Data were analysed using chi-square tests to examine associations between age groups, education levels, and the use of social media and information sources. The results reveal significant associations between age and social media platform preference, with older tourists (44–79 years) favouring Facebook and younger tourists (18–29 years) preferring Instagram and TikTok. Additionally, education level influences the choice of information sources; higher-educated individuals are more likely to use social media and conduct independent research, while those with lower education levels tend to rely more on travel agencies and tourism fairs. These findings highlight the importance of tailored marketing strategies that account for demographic differences, offering practical insights for destination marketing organizations (DMOs) to better engage with diverse tourist segments.
  • Backpackers' space–time behavior in an urban destination: the impact of travel information sources
Publication . Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Costa, Rui Augusto; Moreira, António Carrizo
This research aims to identify the information sources used by backpackers before and during the visit to an urban destination and its influence on the movements performed. It uses a questionnaire survey combined with a GPS app to track the movements of backpackers to identify backpackers' spatiotemporal behavior. A bivariate analysis using non-parametric tests was used to examine the relationships between variables. This study concludes that the consulting online information before the visit has a great deal of influence on the spatiotemporal behavior of the backpackers, namely on the linearity and intensity of the visit. If online information sources are very important due to the intense use of information by backpackers, word of mouth from other travelers should not be disregarded as an important information source. This research can contribute to the definition of more informed and differentiating tourism marketing strategy considering the information sources used and its influence on the movements performed during the visit.
