- Sustainable tourism in protected areas: Perceptions of residents and local communities of Tua Valley Regional Natural ParkPublication . Lopes, Luisa; Esteves, Salete; Santos, Lara; Medina, Lia; Coelho, Edinélida; Lopes, AnaísaPurpose – The development of sustainable tourism is a collaborative effort that contributes to the protection of nature and maintains the economic, environmental, and socio-cultural dimensions crucial to the residents of protected areas (Thapa et al., 2022). But, does the implementation of sustainable tourism practices have a positive impact on the overall satisfaction of residents? Residents' support and active participation in the tourism planning and development process are key elements but also a testament to their importance in the sustainable management of tourism resources (Han et al., 2023). More research in this emerging field is needed (Krittayaruangroj et al., 2023). Theoretical framework – The Prism of Sustainability Model, as indicated by previous research, is a valuable and informative framework for understanding sustainable tourism (Cottrell et al., 2013; Trišić et al., 2023). Design/methodology/approach – The research employs mixed methods. In qualitative research, the relevant information is gathered through semi-structured individual interviews (n=11). All the interviews are processed using qualitative software and thematic content analysis. The results are complemented using quantitative research, collecting primary information based on a survey (n=196), using a non-probabilistic convenience sampling method, administrated to residents of five municipalities of the Tua Valley Regional Natural Park, spread over 19 localities/villages of relevance to the park's activities. All constructs were operationalized with multi-item five-point Likert scales derived from the literature, from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). The analysis started using Jamovi software for the statistical analysis and data was analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). In this process, the measurement model was assessed in terms of internal consistency reliability, convergent and discriminant validity of the constructs. Through a structural model, the hypothesised relationships were analysed, determining the relational structure between the observed and latent variables considered. Findings – The results of the survey indicate a predominantly positive view of the impact of tourism in the park, especially in the areas of sustainability and cooperation with the local community. The statements that obtained the highest averages include the importance of sustainable tourism (4.224) and the need for tourism companies to hire staff locally (4.133). These results suggest that participants value the positive impact of tourism on environmental preservation and supporting the local economy. In addition, there is a positive perception that tourism contributes significantly to the local economy and promotes the restoration of historic sites, with averages around 3.403 and 3.066, respectively. On the other hand, some areas received lower ratings, indicating a limited impact on certain aspects. The statements about the direct benefit of tourism for individuals (2,959) and the creation of jobs for women (2,852) were the least valued, suggesting that the impact of tourism may be insufficient or uneven. In addition, the perception that quality of life has improved due to tourism is the lowest (2,541), indicating less satisfaction with the personal benefits of sustainable tourism. Research, practical & social implications – Results show that, despite the overall benefits, there are significant challenges and opportunities to improve the impact of tourism on local communities and residents' lives. These provide a roadmap for future research and policy development in tourism and community development. Originality/value – To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first studies exploring residents’ satisfaction with sustainable tourism carried out in Portugal.
- Eco-labelling food products as an integral part of the transition to a sustainable food systemPublication . Borges, Eduardo; Campos, Susana; Teixeira, Mário Sérgio; Lucas, Maria Raquel; Correia, Ricardo JorgePurpose | The eco-labelling of food products is an integral part of the transition to a sustainable food system, as it allows consumers to make informed, healthier and more sustainable choices. It reinforces the reputation of companies, showing that they are socially responsible and concerned about environmental issues. The aim of this study is to identify the determinants of the purchase of eco-labelled food products in the Portuguese context. Methodology/Approach | An online questionnaire was carried out among the Portuguese population over 18 years old. Data analysis techniques including descriptive analyses, parametric and non-parametric tests, linear correlation and regression analysis were applied. Expected Results | We expect to identify a positive correlation between consumers' attention to companies' Green Marketing communication and green purchasing behaviour, as well to obtain a positive correlation between the Communicated Socio-environmental Use (CSU) of the producer's declared commitment and green purchasing behaviour. These results are valuable for companies’ managers to develop and evaluate specific communication and marketing actions to the markets, taking into account current consumer preferences.
- How can design thinking improve food sustainability in the Minho region (eno)gastronomy? A multi-actor perspectivePublication . Oliveira, Rafael; Campos, Susana; Rodrigues, Ana Sofia; Vaz-Velho, Manuela; Correia, Ricardo JorgePurpose | This study has the following main goals: i) to define barriers and present specific solutions associated with the food ecosystem, common to the various actors in the territory; ii) to explore the present and future of Minho's (eno)gastronomy and iii) provide innovative responses that meet contemporary consumer demands in terms of health and sustainability. Methodology/Approach | Trough Design Thinking, we pursued a collaborative approach that melds gastronomic traditions with health and sustainability imperatives, ensuring holistic solutions that valorize Minho’s heritage. The process involved iterative workshops, engaging diverse stakeholders to analyze the historical and current state of Minho’s (eno) gastronomy, focusing on the transition to healthier and more sustainable practices. This multi-actor approach enabled integrated solutions, enhancing the food system while considering climate change impacts and modern health trends. Expected Results | The topics addressed by the region's players associated with the agri-food sector and the solutions proposed highlighted the intrinsic relationship between local production and sustainability, emphasising that the proximity between producer and consumer translates not only into a smaller carbon footprint, but also into the socioeconomic and cultural enhancement of the region. These results will enable policymakers to apply a multi-actor approach, taking into account the needs of the various stakeholders in the region and implementing concerted actions that jointly respond to the challenges and needs we have identified.
- Promover o sucesso académico integrando a diversidade: o projeto Mentoring Academy IPBPublication .

- Measuring the Use of Financial Information: Understanding the Use by Politicians in the Local GovernmentPublication . Nogueira, Sónia P.; Jorge, Susana; Gomes, Patrícia; Pimentel, LilianaThis paper proposes a tool to assess the level of financial information (FI) use – the FIU Index. Particularly developed considering the local government context, this Index combines items of information used, with the main types of meetings, and politicians of political bodies (executive committee and local council) where FI is discussed. The FIU Index produces a score resulting from its application to written records of politicians’ speeches, such as those from the minutes of the meetings, allowing to classify the use of FI in a political body, meeting and entity, in ‘low’, ‘moderate’ and ‘high’. With an illustrative example of applying the FIU Index to a sample of Portuguese municipalities, the paper explains how it can be implemented to assess and rank entities, evidencing what needs to be improved so politicians can reach the best use possible of FI, as a tool to improve dialogue with several stakeholders.
- Value co-creation, delight and satisfaction on tourism loyalty: A conceptual frameworkPublication . Esteves, Salete; Mangini, Eduardo; Lopes, LuisaPurpose – The antecedents of loyalty, in general, and in tourism have been profusely examined by researchers worldwide for the last decades. Marketing and leisure/tourism literature suggests that perceived service quality, perceived value, place attachment, destination image, customer satisfaction, and customer delight are pronounced antecedents of loyalty towards a tourism attraction, destination, resource, or player. Still, one important challenge of today in the hospitality sector is delight as customer satisfaction is not enough as an antecedent of tourist loyalty (Ali et al., 2018). Delight and satisfaction share common characteristics, but satisfaction and delight are two separate constructs (Finn, 2005; 2012). In tourism, previous research has worked to explain the significance of customer delight as an antecedent to customer loyalty, for instance in five-star hotel spas in Portugal (Elias-Almeida et al., 2016) or in hotels, restaurants, retail, and theme parks (Torres et al., 2020). This study examines the growing importance of delight in tourism and proposes a conceptual framework to assess the influence of selected antecedents of tourist loyalty and the effect of delight compared to satisfaction on hospitality and tourism. Moreover, originally, connects these constructs with value co-creation as an antecedent of delight and satisfaction, considering that there are numerous outcomes resulting from customer value co-creation, but conceptual models about customer value co-creation in the hospitality and tourism industry that integrate empirical and conceptual knowledge are still unknown (Carvalho & Alves, 2023). Theoretical framework – In this research, different currents of thought are included, namely the Expectancy-Disconfirmation Model (Oliver, 1980) stating that customers are expected to compare pre-purchase expectations with the actual experience of a product or service. If perceived performance fails expectations, dissatisfaction or outrage will occur. If perceived service quality exceeds expectations, positive responses such as satisfaction or delight will arise (Torres et al., 2014). Also, Service-Dominant Logic, Customer-Dominant Logic, Social Exchange Theory, and others, are considered. Knowledge about these aspects remains theoretically and empirically ambiguous. Design/methodology/approach – This is a theoretical essay based on a literature review. Being conceptual, this study resorted to a semi-systematic literature review, both to analyze and to structure delight on tourism and value co-creation, but also because this is a very broad field full of concepts, methods, and practical applications. Findings – Results point out that delight, satisfaction, and value co-creation have different roles in loyalty as they enhance the experience lived by tourists. This study, through a conceptual framework, is contributing both to advance scientific knowledge and to clear practical implications. Research, practical & social implications – Being exploratory in nature, our conceptual framework still needs to be tested in the hospitality and tourism sector. In fact, quantitative or mixed studies must be conducted to test our model. Originality/value – This study extends the literature by combining empirical and conceptual knowledge. The originality of this study resides in the fact that it presents a multi-dimensional conceptual framework that can be helpful both to academics and practitioners when theorising about or developing loyalty in the hospitality and tourism industry through delight and value co-creation.
- Literary tourism in northern portugal: an exploratory perspectivePublication . Sousa, Bruno; Liberato, Pedro; Liberato, Dália; Pereira, Carina; Rodrigues, Cristina; Costa, Adriano; Malheiro, Alexandra; Esteves, Elsa Tavares; Carvalho, PedroThe present study intends to structure a tourist offer based on literary tourism, with the proposal of literary routes in the Northern region of Portugal, in particular the municipalities covered by the Regional Tourism Authority - Entidade Regional de Turismo do Porto e Norte (ERTPNP), through the dynamisation of its literary heritage and its socio-cultural stimulation. It is expected to contribute to the promotion of tourism policies oriented to the development of new products and experiences, based on the identity and specificities of the different territories involved, with relevant authors and works. In addition, it is expected to develop a prototype of an APP for the promotion and dynamisation of one of the literary routes, the most representative of the literary heritage of the region which will provide an immersive and rich experience. A process that will involve the different stakeholders. The project aims to create a territorial database where a literary tourism development model can be applied through tourist routes. The criteria for applying the methodology will be based on: Cultural value of literary activities and their attractiveness to visitors; Literary nature of activities offered; Benefits for the local community; Involvement of the local community in the design of literary experiences; Relationship between visitors, local producers, and the local community; Use of local resources for the development of literary experiences; Use of digital techniques to develop engaging and participatory experiences.
- The probative value of municipal documents in the exchange of present goods for future goodsPublication .
