- An Assessment of Food Consumption Practices in the Mozambican Provinces of Inhambane and Gaza: Implications for Mycotoxin Exposure RiskPublication . Ribeiro, Maria Isabel; Mussalama, Edson; Manhiça, Agnaldo; Cabo, Paula; Venâncio, Armando; Rodrigues, Paula; Macuamule, CustódiaIn Mozambique, mycotoxins represent a public health threat. The paucity of research and the absence of monitoring programs exacerbate the population’s risk of exposure. This study aimed to describe the dietary habits of populations in Gaza and Inhambane provinces and to investigate potential differences in average monthly consumption by province, place of residence, sex, and age group. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed, involving 55 households and a total of 300 individuals (Gaza: n=151; Inhambane: n=149). Data were collected using a food frequency questionnaire. The analysis revealed that household diets were predominantly composed of “Dairy products” where milk stood out, “Vegetables and greens”, notably onions and lettuce/watercress, “Beverages”, primarily water and tea, “Fruits”, such as mango, fresh tomato, and banana, “Bread, cereals and related products”, particularly rice, “Eggs, meat and fish”, namely fresh fish and eggs. Furthermore, the most consumed fats and sweets are oils and sugar, respectively. Statistically significant differences were observed between provinces: Inhambane exhibited higher consumption of “Dairy products”, “Fruits”, and “Beverages”. The results showed that consumption patterns across most food groups were dependent by place of residence. Additionally, sex and age were associated with different consumption of “Dairy products” and “Beverages”, respectively. These findings provide a comprehensive overview of dietary patterns in Gaza and Inhambane provinces and underscore the widespread consumption of foods vulnerable to mycotoxin contamination. The results offer a critical foundation for developing targeted sampling strategies to assess fungal and mycotoxin contamination and for conducting risk assessments of population exposure.
- Awareness of sustainability practices in construction: learning in a real contextPublication . Silva, Flora; Santos, Adriana; Rio, Yuleidy; Barros, Paula MariaAs part of the Higher Professional Technical Course in Civil Construction at a Polytechnic Higher Education Institution, a teaching experience was proposed in which the Technical Installations and Sustainability Practices in Construction course units were taught interconnectedly. The studentsmobilized the knowledge acquired in the first-course unit to carry out practical work on more sustainable solutions in buildings as part of the second-course unit. This experience allowed the students to apply their knowledge in scenarios close to their professional reality and to reflect on the complex issues of sustainability in construction.
- Collaborative work between Polytechnic Higher Education students: manufacturing processes, safety and sustainabilityPublication . Silva, Flora; Ribeiro, J.E.; Barros, Paula MariaThe link with the real working environment, combined with the sharing of knowledge and collaboration between students from different courses, was the basis of a teaching experience involving students from the Mechanical Technology I course unit of the Mechanical Engineering degree course and the Safety and Environment course unit of the Higher Professional Technical Course in Sustainable Technologies in Mechanics and Vehicles, at a Polytechnic Higher Education Institution in the north of Portugal. The final objective was to carry out collaborative work on metalworking processes, the safety at work related to these processes, and waste management.
- Defining industrial tourism in the cross-border region of Portugal and SpainPublication . Scalabrini, Elaine C.B.; Alves, Francisco; Neto, Reginaldo; Teixeira, Felipe L.; García, Joaquín; Velasco, Míguel; Teixeira, João Paulo; Vaz, Roberto Ivo; Fernandes, Paula Odete; .This paper deals with the definition and valorisation of industrial and pre-industrial tourism in the crossborder region of Terras de Trás-os-Montes (Portugal) and Castilla y León (Spain). Industrial and preindustrial heritage is crucial to collective memory and has significant cultural, historical and tourist value. Industrial tourism is emerging as an initiative that enhances historic landscapes and contributes to urban development, the revitalisation of communities and the preservation of heritage. It is considered an innovative strategy for rehabilitating territories, transforming old facilities into attractions, exploring historic sites or operating companies. The “IN_GENIOS_DUERO_DOURO” project focused on promoting this heritage in the Douro-Duero Euroregion. The methodology included detailed mapping and characterisation, creating a database with 1,079 sites identified in 22 Portuguese and 80 Spanish municipalities. The results show that most sites are in Spain (77.1 %). The municipalities with the most identified sites are Valladolid (250) in Spain and Mirandela (32) in Portugal. The main heritage categories include transport infrastructure (335), wineries (255) and the food industry (221). Around 47.27 per cent of the sites identified are accessible to tourists. The database created is fundamental for valuing, safeguarding and designing tourist routes.
- Determinants of Sustainable Organic Food Consumption in TunisiaPublication . Zaidi, Saida; Fernandes, António; Ribeiro, Maria IsabelOrganic farming plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable agriculture by preserving ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, and ensuring the production of healthier food. As the demand for organic products continues to rise globally, understanding the factors driving organic food consumption becomes essential for fostering sustainable consumer behavior. Tunisia, with its deep-rooted agricultural heritage and growing interest in organic and sustainable living, presents a unique case for examining these dynamics. Given the country's ongoing economic development and urbanization, it is critical to explore the factors shaping consumer choices regarding organic food. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing organic food consumption in Tunisia by assessing consumer attitudes, purchasing habits, and barriers to adoption. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected through a structured survey targeting a diverse sample of Tunisians that explored socio-demographic characteristics, economic constraints, motivations, and challenges to organic food consumption, with statistical analysis applied to identify key trends and correlations. Findings reveal that 23% of respondents purchase no organic products, with supermarkets dominating distribution channels and limited availability through direct farmer sales or specialty stores. Consumer knowledge is notably deficient, with over 60% of participants demonstrating limited understanding of organic food. Regression analysis identifies attitudes toward organic food as the strongest predictor of purchase intention, followed by health awareness, while perceived price negatively affects consumption. Interestingly, environmental concerns showed no significant association with purchase intention. These results show the need for strategies that improve attitudes and address price concerns to boost organic food adoption in Tunisia.
- Digital Marketing as a Tool to Promote Rural Tourism Ventures: The Case of Casa da LagoaPublication . Ribeiro, Mafalda; Esteves, Elsa Tavares; Morais, Elisabete PauloRural Tourism emerges as a unique tourism product, capable of attracting the attention of tourists to rural areas whose tourist potential is considerable, but which is sometimes not well used. For this reason, companies operating in rural tourism must adopt specific measures to be able to promote their product/service, and the tourist destination itself, being able to use the various digital marketing tools for the same purpose. In this sense, the main objective of this paper is to analyse the presence of Casa da Lagoa, Portugal, in the different social media, through an exploratory analysis of its website and a quantitative analysis of the other social media used by the company
