- Exploring time-space behavior in wine tourism: A case study of the Bairrada Wine Route in PortugalPublication . Kastenholz, E.; Caldeira, A.; Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Simões, O.; Albuquerque, H.Wine routes support tourism by merging wine, culture, and regional experiences to boost local economies and preserve terroir. This study investigates the Bairrada Wine Route in Portugal, focusing on visitor behavior via GPS tracking and surveys. The research offers an innovative look at how digital platforms and mapped itineraries impact tourists' time space movements, enhancing understanding of wine routes’ role in sustainable regional development and destination management by steering visitor flows and amplifying under-visited locations.
- Flickr geotagged photos in tourism research: How important are they to understand visitors’ space-time behaviour?Publication . Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Kadar, BálintThis research is a pioneering exploration into the role of geotagged photos from the Flickr social network in understanding visitors’ space-time behaviour. It aims to identify the main research topics, the methods used, and their contributions to tourism research, highlighting this important source of information to tourism studies, particularly in tourism management. As far as the authors know, no research has yet delved into this unique and promising area, which we believe will spark a new wave of interest in the field.
- Improving Public Financial Management: International Comparisons of IPSAS-Oriented Accrual ReformsPublication . Nogueira, Sónia P.; D'Amore, Mariano; Jorge, Susana; Mattei, G.In the last decades several countries across the world have been reforming their public sector accounting (PSA) systems to include accrual-based accounting and financial reporting, and in some even IPSAS. In the EU such reforms are particularly interesting, given the importance of harmonized PSA to sustain comparability between Member States’ financial condition and fiscal policies. Italy and Portugal are two countries interesting to compare, because despite similar administrative cultures and both with some experience with accrual accounting in the public sector, the recent trajectory towards adopting the IPSAS has been quite different in these countries: Portugal was front runner, while Italy is resisting to the PSA international harmonization process. This paper analyses the institutional arrangements that have been marking PSA reforms in the last decades in both countries, in order to understand whether and how they are affecting the current path towards IPSAS.

- Motivations of literary tourism in northern PortugalPublication . Esteves, Elsa Tavares; Costa, Adrinano; Carvalho, Pedro; Pereira, Carina; Lourenço, Cristina; Malheiro, Alexandra; Liberato, Dália; Liberato, Pedro; Sousa, BrunoThe purpose of this study is to identify the motivations of literary tourism consumers in the northern region of Portugal. We hope to contribute to the promotion of tourism policies geared towards the development of new products and experiences, based on the identity and specificities of the different territories involved, with relevant authors and works.
- Spatial-temporal analysis of comfort perception among tourists in the municipality of Porto (Portugal): GPS-based insights for urban planningPublication . Silva, P.; Lopes, H.; Remoaldo, P.; Martins, Márcio RibeiroA literature review on outdoor thermal comfort reveals a significant influence of weather conditions on the tourist' behaviour (e.g., Hardy et al., 2017; Yao et al., 2021; Geletič et al., 2023). In recent years, the outdoor thermal comfort issue has posed a significant challenge to urban planning. The use of GPS data is becoming increasingly widespread in the analysis of behaviour and the relationship between meteorological conditions and decision-making processes. The territorial management depends of a proactive approach to achieve the sustainable development of the sector.
- Spatiotemporal tourist behaviour forecastPublication . Fontes, Ruta; Costa, Rui; Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Correia, Ricardo; Carvalho, AidaThis research systematically explores spatiotemporal tourist behaviour forecasting by examining and comparing traditional, machine learning, and hybrid models. Specifically, it seeks to identify key data sources, analyze their impact on prediction accuracy, and evaluate the performance of diverse analytical models. Furthermore, it investigates the practical applications of these forecasts across different areas, offering valuable insights for tourism stakeholders (Zheng et al., 2017)
- Territorial resources and sustainable innovation in tourism accommodation: a portuguese startup competitive strategyPublication . Fernandes, Catarina; Pinheiro, EduardoThe tourism industry is under increasing pressure to address its negative externalities, mitigate resource depletion, and adapt to changing consumer expectations. In this context, sustainable innovation has emerged as a critical strategy for achieving sustainable growth and competitive differentiation, encompassing the development and implementation of new products, processes, and organizational practices that reduce environmental impacts and promote sustainability within the sector. The use of renewable endogenous products as a catalyst for the eco-innovation process, beyond the implementation of sustainable practices (e.g., rainwater harvesting and reduction of single-use plastics), has not, to the best of our knowledge, been sufficiently investigated in the literature. Therefore, this study aims to provide a comprehensive perspective on sustainable tourism innovation, considering the role of the territory, in the perspective of resource provider, driving innovation, as well as the ultimate beneficiary of this innovation, promoting sustainable development, particularly in low-density territories. The study employs a qualitative methodological framework, operationalized through an in-depth case study of Ecocubo, a Portuguese startup specializing in modular ecological accommodation. Grounded in the Resource-Based View (RBV) Theory, Dynamic Capabilities Theory, Network Theory, and Open Innovation, this research demonstrates how sustainable tourism and tourism-related firms can achieve competitive advantage by orchestrating environmental resources and green capabilities.
