The article examines the concept of literary enquiry through two emblematic works: Dora Bruder by Patrick Modiano and Histoire des grands-parents que je n'ai pas eus by Ivan Jablonka. In Dora Bruder, Modiano explores the disappearance of a young girl during the German occupation of France, intertwining historical research and personal narrative to reconstruct a collective memory that time has obscured. In contrast, Jablonka draws on family history to trace the fate of his deported grandparents, blending historical rigor with narrative subjectivity. Through the analysis of these two works, the article shows how Modiano and Jablonka reinvent the genre of literary enquiry, transforming memory into a critical space for questioning identity and ethics, while redefining the forms of contemporary narrative. Our aim is to demonstrate what literature can achieve: preserving and enacting memory.
