Education for sustainable development is increasingly relevant as environmental problems intensify. Changes in policies and increased citizen participation are, therefore, challenges on a global scale, for which we need to find new directions. However, concern for the environment has not been as deep, committed and widespread as would be desirable. The study of environmental attitudes is, therefore, very current and important to understand which factors influence their differentiation. In the present study, we investigated environmental attitudes in rural and urban students, aged between early and middle adolescence. Data collection was based on two questionnaires, adapted for the Portuguese population: The Environmental Attitude Inventory (EAI-24) and the Adolescents Environmental Attitude Scale (AEAS). The sample consisted of 1,262 students (53.7% women). The results showed a decrease in ecocentric environmental attitudes from early adolescence to middle adolescence; urban students do not differ from rural ones in ecocentric dimensions (Attitudes towards the degradation of nature, Involvement in nature preservation; Attraction to nature, Nature preservation policies, Environment preservation behaviors), compared with rural students. No statistically significant interactions were found in ecocentric environmental attitudes when analysed simultaneously according to age and geographic area, showing that the decrease in environmental attitudes in the ecocentric dimension Attraction to Nature occurred in rural students, but not in urban students. These results contribute to the deepening of knowledge about environmental attitudes during adolescence, as well as about the differences that these stages of life show when comparing the attitudes of rural and urban students. The implications of the results for research and environmental education are discussed.
