Abstract(s)
Teachers are one of the most important resources for the educational success of any society. In this sense, international policy agendas have been highlighting the importance of their qualification. For example, in the African Union's Continental Strategy for Education in Africa (2016-2025), of which São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) has been a member since 1975, the first goal focuses on revitalizing the teaching profession to ensure its quality at various levels. Also, the goal 4.c of the UNESCO Action Plan developed under the United Nations Agenda 2030 argues for a substantial increase in the supply of qualified teachers, including through international cooperation. This paper presents an in-service teacher education programme (TED), for teachers in the field of biology and natural sciences, developed in the context of cooperation between several Santomean and Portuguese institutions under the Programme of Integrated Support to the Education System of São Tomé and Príncipe (PAISE-STP). The teacher education programme was implemented between November 2020 and June 2021 and involved, more directly, 37 trainee teachers from STP, 2 trainers (one Portuguese and one Santomean) and an advisor from a Portuguese university. We will describe the strategies and resources used throughout the various thematic modules that constitute the TED. The added value and challenges associated with the professional development of those involved (trainers and trainees) will also be mapped out, based on the problematization of evidence collected during the internal monitoring of the TED, such as questionnaires applied to trainees, documental analysis of the educational resources produced and also field notes (particularly of training sessions and team meetings) in conjunction with scientific literature in the field of teacher training and development cooperation (e.g. Ferreira et al., 2015; Guthrie, 202; Lopes, 2020). It is expected that the sharing of the experience of the 1st edition of this TED with the Lusconf2021 participants will give rise to suggestions and recommendations for the 2nd edition of the TED, which is currently initiating, as well as for other teacher education programmes that are being developed in the Lusophone community.
