Abstract(s)
This study aims to investigate the issues of death and loss in an educational context, as they are realities present in the daily lives of children that can influence their way of being, being, feeling, communicating, interacting, and participating in the school career and their daily life. We consulted different authors for a better understanding of education for loss, death, and grief in childhood, to better understand how children understand death throughout their global development, recognizing the importance of emotional expression, using pedagogical resources to work education for death and loss with children in our Supervised Teaching Practice (PES), namely in a Pre-School Education (EPE) group and in a 1st year class of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education (1st CEB). For our investigation, we started from the problem question: Considering that loss, death and mourning are also part of children's daily lives, how can educators/teachers integrate this theme into educational practice? and, to give you the answer(s), we thought of the following objectives: (1) Understand the perceptions of educators/teachers about situations in which children go through loss and grief, the impact on their development and the relevance of integrating the theme of death, loss and grief in educational practice; (2) Understand how educators/teachers integrate death, loss and grief in an educational context; (3) Use the free expression of feelings, emotions, thoughts, ideas and beliefs as pedagogical resources to work on education for death and loss in childhood; (4) Develop strategies that help to explore the theme of loss and death with children at an early age; (5) Help children understand that death is the end of a cycle and that growth implies gains and losses; (6) Promote the degree of resilience of children in situations of death, loss and grief; and (7) Describe and analyze our own pedagogical practices, based on the learning experiences developed to work with children with loss and death. We opted for a qualitative investigation, using some data collection techniques and instruments, such as participant observation, a questionnaire survey carried out with educators and teachers, field notes, photographic records ( photovoice), and children's productions. We describe and analyze the data collected during the PES and the learning experiences carried out, which are related to the theme of this investigation, thus allowing us, through the information collected and the experiences lived, to understand how children deal and if express about loss and death, and also allowed us to reflect on the methods adopted by educators and teachers concerning their professional experiences about the issue of loss and death in an educational context, enabling us to improve our strategies with this reality.
