Abstract(s)
This dissertation is the result of research work developed within the scope of the Master's Degree in Environmental Education, at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança. This is a study on the topic “Urban Solid Waste Management in the Bandim market”, which has become one of the biggest problems in the city of Bissau, mainly due to the associated environmental, social and public health impacts. The study considered the following research questions: (i) What is the opinion of traders/sellers in the Bandim market, Guinea-Bissau, about the current management of urban waste and the impacts on the environment and health? (ii) How is the organization and management of urban waste in the Bandim market carried out and how can it be improved in conjunction with Bissau City Hall services? Thus, two specific objectives of the research were defined: To understand the opinions of traders/sellers in the Bandim market on the problem of disposing of solid urban waste and the environmental impacts caused by them; Characterize the urban waste collection and forwarding practices in the Bandim market. The methodology used for data collection was a mixed research methodology, as it included a quantitative component (using a questionnaire survey to the market's fixed traders and occasional vendors who use the streets around the market) and a qualitative component, using semi-structured interviews directed to Bissau City Hall technicians. The results showed that urban solid waste management in the Bandim market, Guinea-Bissau, faces challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and lack of resources, which contribute to environmental damage and health risks, which are recognized by participants. The study highlights the need for specific environmental education interventions and the importance of everyone's collaboration to achieve sustainable waste management, protecting public health and reinforcing environmental integrity.
