Abstract(s)
Nowadays, young people are increasingly turning to the second generation of communities and services, i.e. Web 2.0 resources and applications, particularly social networks. Social networks have recently become increasingly visible, with a constant increase in the number of users and a diversification of the ways in which they are used, both to interact with people they know and to meet new people. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and X have gained a foothold in the routines of young Portuguese. Schools must keep up to date and adapt to the continuous technological innovations of the information and communication society. In higher education, teachers can incorporate Web 2.0 applications, such as social networks, to enrich the teaching and learning process for students in various subjects. Social networks have become an integral part of the lives of young people, who are increasingly connected to the Internet, and it is up to the educational community to support students in using these platforms to express their learning. In this way, it can be seen that Instagram, WhatsApp and TikTok are the most used social networks, according to the research carried out for this work on the most used networks at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB). The aim of the study is therefore to understand the role of social networks in the academic performance of students at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança. The methodology adopted was descriptive and exploratory in nature. To this end, it was necessary to draw up a questionnaire based on the objective of the study, after which the questionnaire was applied to IPB students. The sample was 145 respondents The results show that students are fully connected to social networks. However, social networks neither contribute positively nor negatively to students' academic performance.
