  • Enhancing critical thinking skills through children’s literature: a case study of relevant Portuguese picture books
Publication . Zedam, Samir; Castanheira, Luis; Mesquita, Cristina
Children’s literature or juvenile literature is a means for putting a purpose into practice, which enhan- ces the development of language skills and other critical thinking skills that provide the foundation of learning. Children’s literature belongs more to the arts than to the scientific disciplines. Besides concerns for skills development and the acquisition of knowledge, children’s literature goes beyond these, which are usually defined by educators as being practical, enjoying, appreciating, and develo- ping tasks, which can help children foster their capacities with a critical mind. And, therefore, it was strongly selected as one area in which the process of critical thinking could be taught, because the purposes for including it in the curriculum are unique. This study looks at how children’s literature portfolios help develop critical thinking skills in our children’s learning process and, moreover, aims to assess how children comprehend critical thinking as a term. Regarding this framework, the study intends to achieve the above-mentioned goals by focusing on a systematic literature review to examine the development of critical thinking in children’s literature through the selection of relevant Portu- guese picture books as a case study, in order to provide a clear picture of the extent to which critical thinking skills are addressed in schoolchildren’s curricula.

  • Education during COVID-19 pandemic: from disruption to recovery
Publication . Zedam, Samir; Castanheira, Luis; Mesquita, Cristina
Education in its broad sense is an essential human right, but more than that, it plays the enabling right that gives legal power and capacity for the realization of all human rights. When the education systems collapse, peace, and productive societies, especially in basic education cannot be sustained. Education, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, experienced great disruption, creating the largest disruption of the educational systems, affecting nearly 1.6 billion learners through nationwide school closures among 190 countries. This paper explores to what extent COVID-19 disrupts education by analysing the Global reports, and the global educational organizations’ statistics such as UNESCO, UNICEF, and ICESCO and their visions about the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, this study explores the transformation of education during COVID-19 as a disruption period, and after the pandemic as its recovery period by shedding a light on what academic researchers predicted in their papers. Regarding this unexpected situation, this study intends to focus on the literature methodology to draw a clear image with numerical analysis and descriptive reviews of the changes that COVID-19 caused in the field of education. This paper comes to realise a profound loss of learning during the pandemic, and to give the essential measures that should apply to protect education and recover it.
  • Critical thinking and teacher’s profile: central competences in the educational process
Publication . Zedam, Samir; Castanheira, Luis; Mesquita, Cristina
The concept of critical thinking was highlighted in most scientific classifications a couple of decades ago. Critical thinking is an essential skill that can simplify all aspects of human life. In its broad sense, it means the art of thinking about thinking. It is a reflective action and reasonable thinking that is focused on deciding what to believe or what to do. Today, our students are overwhelmed with information from all kinds of sources, in particular from various online platforms, and at the same time, critical thinking is the focal point missed in many students. Many scholars and educators believe in two approaches: on the one hand, is that a teacher’s profile plays the focal point and the pinnacle of the pyramid of the education process (teacher, student, and content), and on the other, critical thinking is the heart and the soul of learning. Our study aims to identify to what extent teachers should integrate critical thinking approach through tackling critical thinking in terms of the education process, its dimensions, and the importance of thinking critically for students who attend any education program. Moreover, this study explores the transfer of critical thinking skills from pre-service teacher training as an agent of change in the field of education into the classroom practice and achieving a student’s ability to think critically. As an intending result of this, the study is drawing general highlights of the significance of critical thinking, the role of a teacher in promoting and integrating critical thinking among students, and a set of strategies that can help teachers stimulate critical thinking during their lectures.
