- Perceção dos residentes face ao impacto do turismoPublication . Fernandes, Paula Odete; Pires, Luís; Fontes, Carla; Costa, Carlos Casimiro da; Correia, Ricardo; Carvalho, Aida; Cunha, Carlos R.; Ramalhosa, Elsa; Correia, Alexandra I.; Parafita, AlexandreIn tourism the local community are not only one of the most essential element for the destination offer but also the key for its differentiation. The knowledge about their expectation and satisfaction regarding tourism development is extremely important for the development process itself. Based on that statement it was developed an empirical research where the local community perception emerges as the key element to be considered. Specifically, in this project it was analysed the perception of the local community, in two different small Portuguese villages, regarding the development of tourism as well as their position regarding the side effects that a possible increase in tourism could provide. It was concluded the positive relationship between the perception of the local image and the perception of economic and socio-cultural impacts caused by tourism and an inverse relationship between the perception of the local image and the perception of environmental caused by tourism.
- Intangible approaches to improve individual health indicators and empower caregiversPublication . Cunha, Carlos R.; Moreira, André Silva; Pires, Luís; Fernandes, Paula OdetePopulations worldwide are ageing at a faster pace than in the past, and this demographic transition will affect almost all aspects of society [1]. The number and proportion of people aged 60 years and more in the population are increasing; in 2019, the number of people aged 60 years and older was one billion; this number will increase to 1.4 billion by 2030 and 2.1 billion by 2050 [2]. Population ageing is an irreversible worldwide trend. This is the inevitable result of demographic transition, the trend towards longer lives and smaller families, which occurs even in countries with relatively young populations. In 2021, one in ten people worldwide was aged 65 and over; by 2050, this age group is forecasted to represent one in six people worldwide [3]. Globally, the number of people aged 80 years and over is increasing even faster than the number of people aged 65 years and over. By 2050, the world will have an estimated 459 million people aged 80 years and over, which is nearly triple the number in 2021, at approximately 155 million [3]. This finding was seen in all regions of the world where the number of older people increased rapidly between 1980 and 2021, a trend that is likely to continue for the next three decades [3]; even in Portugal, the proportion of older people as in other countries has been increasing steadily over the past decades. By 2050, Portugal expects an old-age dependency rate of 68.8%, which is one of the highest ratios in Europe [4]. The North interior of Portugal, namely, Terras de Trás-os-Montes, is following the same behaviour as what is being observed in the world and in Portugal. Since it is a region located in the northern interior of Portugal and is considered a region of low population density, it has been seeing an increase in the ageing index, and the ageing trends are evident. It is highlighted that in 2021, Terras de Trás-osMontes’ region presents an ageing index of 359.0.
- An SNMP filesystem in userspacePublication . Lopes, Rui Pedro; Pedrosa, Tiago; Pires, LuísModern computer networks are constantly increasing in size and complexity. Despite this, data networks are a critical factor for the success of many organizations. Monitoring their health and operation sta- tus is fundamental, and usually performed through specific network man- agement architectures, developed and standardized in the last decades. On the other hand, file systems have become one of the best well known paradigms of human-computer interaction, and have been around since early days in the personal computer industry. In this paper we propose a file system interface to network management information, allowing users to open, edit and visualize network and systems operation information.
- Maintenance behaviour-based prediction system using data miningPublication . Bastos, Pedro; Lopes, Rui Pedro; Pires, Luís; Pedrosa, TiagoIn the last years we have assisted to several and deep changes in industrial manufacturing. Induced by the need of increasing efficiency, bigger flexibility, better quality and lower costs, it became more complex. The complexity of this new scenario has caused big pressure under enterprises production systems and consequently in its maintenance systems. Manufacturing systems recognize high level costs due equipment breakdown, motivated by the time spent to repair, which corresponds to no production time and scrapyard, and also money spent in repair actions. Usually, enterprises do not share data produced from their maintenance interventions. This investigation intends to create an organizational architecture that integrates data produced in factories on their activities of reactive, predictive and preventive maintenance. The main idea is to develop a decentralized predictive maintenance system based on data mining concepts. Predicting the possibility of breakdowns with bigger accuracy will increase systems reliability
- The role of Bill of materials and movements (BOMM) in the virtual enterprises environmentPublication . Pires, Luís; Carvalho, José Dinis; Moreira, Nuno AfonsoOrganizing and managing dynamic networks of enterprises (or virtual enterprises (VE)) is a very complex task and many issues are still to be effectively covered. Apart from the models that can be used to create and manage VEs, product data play a central role in the VE life cycle. VE composition, interaction among VE members (Autonomous Production Systems in this work), as well as its relationship with the market, is severely dependent on the product technical specifications as well as on the product process planning information. In traditional managing systems for the single enterprise environment the Bill of Materials (BOM) plays that role and in this paper is proposed a Bill of Materials and Movements (BOMM) as its equivalent in VE environments. The BOMM includes product structure, high level process planning information and some degree of VE composition. BOMM is present during VE formation, operation, and reconfiguration, playing a central role in the material detailed planning and in the movement planning between VE members. In this article the BOMM role during the VE life cycle is described in detail.
- Consortium agreement template for virtual enterprisesPublication . Carvalho, José Dinis; Moreira, Nuno Afonso; Pires, LuísThis chapter addresses the contractual legislation problem as an integration problem within the virtual enterprise context. In order to address the problem in a real legal platform, we create an example of a consortium agreement template based on the existing Portuguese legislation. The legislation is no more than standard procedures and guidelines to address an organization’s formalization within the legal system and society. Looking through the existing Portuguese legislation, as an example, we found a way to legally fit virtual enterprises (VEs). Moreover, we propose a consortium agreement template as a preestablished standard agreement to legally support VEs before specific legislation is created. We propose that the enterprises, when joining a market of service providers, would automatically accept this consortium agreement template in order to more rapidly become a partner in a VE as soon as business opportunities arise.
- Boosting cultural heritage in rural communities through an ICT platform: the Viv@vó projectPublication . Cunha, Carlos R.; Carvalho, Aida; Afonso, Luís C.M.; Silva, Daniel; Fernandes, Paula Odete; Pires, Luís; Costa, Carlos Casimiro da; Correia, Ricardo; Ramalhosa, Elsa; Correia, Alexandra I.; Parafita, AlexandreRural regions concentrate on themselves a very rich set of ancestral traditions. The perpetuation of such traditions has been achieved through transmission between generations. Unfortunately, all this knowledge is typically elders-centered and it lacks effective processes of digitalization, storage and providing-systems for that all this heritage can effectively be perpetuated through future generations that are digital-born. From this base, it was created a project case study limited to the Portuguese Northeast region, named Viv@vó – living in the grandma's house. This paper presents the ICT platform that was created in this project and some main achievements during the project development process. Tourism and mainly experience and cultural heritage tourism are growing in tourist’s interests. Rural regions have an untapped potential for this slice of tourism industry. Rural regions have an enormous collection of ancestral knowledge that we are responsible to deliver to future generations as an inheritance to which they are entitled.
- Profiling computer energy consumption on organizationsPublication . Lopes, Rui Pedro; Pires, Luís; Pedrosa, Tiago; Marian, VasileModern organizations depend on computers to work. Text processing, CAD, CAM, simulation, statistical analysis and so on are fundamental for maintaining high degree of productivity and competitiveness. Computers in an organization, consume a considerable percentage of the overall energy and, although a typical computer provides power saving technologies, such as suspending or hibernating components, this feature can be disabled. Moreover, the user can opt for never turning off the workstation. Well defined power saving policies, with appropriate automatic mechanisms to apply them, can provide significant power savings with consequent reduction of the power expense. With several computers in an organization, it is necessary to build the profile of the energy consumption. We propose installing a software probe in each computer to instrument the power consumption, either directly, by using a power meter, or md1rectly, by measuring the processor performance counters. This distributed architecture, with software probes in every computer and a centralized server for persistence and decision making tries to save energy, by defining and applying organization level power saving policies.
- Montesinho Natural Park: general description and natural valuesPublication . Castro, José; Figueiredo, Tomás de; Fonseca, Felícia; Castro, João Paulo; Nobre, Sílvia; Pires, LuísThe Montesinho Natural Park (PNM, Parque Natural de Montesinho) is a protected area located in the municipalities of Vinhais and Bragança, in the administrative NUT Alto Trás-os-Montes (PTlI8), the mountainous region of northeast Portugal. It was created in 1979 and consists of 748 km2 of natural wooded landscape and traditional mountain agricultural landscape, with highly variable gradients. PNM lies in the vast northeast Trás-os-Montes plateau, with average altitude around 750-900 111, which is pari of the Iberian Meseta northern block (Medeiros. 1987; Ribeiro et aI., 1987). However, in PNM elevation ranges more than 1,000 Ill, from the lowest point in the River Monte (436 m). its western border, to the top of Montesinho, at 1,487 m. The main altitudinal belts correspond also to the main landforms found in the area.
