- Genetic algorithm for flexible job shop scheduling problem - a case studyPublication . Ferreira, Adriano; Guevara, Gabriela; Pereira, Ana I.; Barbosa, José; Leitão, PauloThis work proposes the impact assessment of the workers in the optimal time of operations in a Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem. In this work, a real enterprise was studied. The problem consists in finding the workers operations schedule, taking into account the precedence constraints. The scheduling of operations is a complex problem consisting in determining the optimal allocation of tasks to resources under a set of constraints, which in enterprise business assumes a critical issue. Solving this issue requires the use of optimization techniques that guarantees the achievement of acceptable solutions as optimized as possible. In industrial environments, characterized by the frequent occurrence of unplanned disturbances and changes, the optimal plan becomes inapplicable and obsolete very fast. This introduces a new requirement to the use of optimization techniques, where besides the quality of the calculated solution, it is also crucial to consider the time to compute the solution. This paper studies the application of a genetic algorithm approach to determine the scheduling in an industrial factory plant organized as flexible job shop problem. Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem (FJSSP) is an extension of the traditional Job Shop Scheduling Problem, differing from this in the sense that some workers may be capable of performing more than one type of tasks. Additionally, for each task there is at least, one worker that is capable of performing the operation. The main objective is to minimize the finish time of the last task completed in the schedule.
- Loosed coupled simulation of smart grid control systemsPublication . Ferreira, Adriano; Leitão, Paulo; Barata, JoséSmart grids rely on the integration of distributed energy resources towards an intelligent and distributed manner to organize the electrical power grid enabled by a bidirectional flow of information to improve reliability and robustness, fault detection and system operation, and plug-and-playability of energy devices. The integration of information and communication technologies (ICT), one of the key enablers of smart grids, will ease the deployment of intelligent and distributed systems implementing the automation functions. In this context, there is a need to assess how these systems, developed using these emergent technologies, e.g., multi-agent systems, data analytics and machine learning, will behave and affect the working conditions of the power grid. This paper aims to explore the development of a transparent and loose-coupled interface between the behavioral control system and the physical or simulated power system environment, in a coupled simulation perspective, aiming to assess and improve the development of such systems during the design phase
- A genetic algorithm approach for the scheduling in a robotic-centric flexible manufacturing systemPublication . Pereira, Ana I.; Ferreira, Adriano; Barbosa, José; Lima, José; Leitão, PauloScheduling assumes a crucial importance in manufacturing systems, optimizing the allocation of operations to the right resources at the most appropriate time. Particularly in the Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) topology, where the combination of possibilities for this association exponential increases, the scheduling task is even more critical. This paper presents a heuristic scheduling method based on genetic algorithm for a robotic-centric FMS. Real experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, ensuring a reliable and optimized scheduling process.
- A potential field load scheduling approach for self-sustainable electrical microgridsPublication . Ferreira, Adriano; Leitão, Paulo; Barata, JoséThe electrical microgrids concept emerged from the proliferation of renewable energy systems and their spreading across the distribution system, alongside with electrical vehicles and storage systems. This change in the electrical energy paradigm implies a change in the way these systems are modeled and controlled due to their ability to operate as autonomous entities, decoupled from the main grid. This separation implies that the microgrid operates under tighter control in order to remain independent and self-sustainable, where prioritization, scheduling and shedding assume crucial roles. This paper introduces an innovative way to optimize the resource allocation of controllable loads in an electrical microgrid operating in island mode by using the potential fields concept. For this purpose, individual nodes representing producers and consumers are enriched with potential fields, being able to optimize their schedule and behavior, and consequently increase the microgrid’s self-sustainability.
- Smart inspection tools combining multi-agent systems and advanced quality controlPublication . Barbosa, José; Leitão, Paulo; Ferreira, Adriano; Queiroz, Jonas; Angione, Giacomo; Lo Duca, GiuliaAlthough the everlasting goal of achieving a zerodefect production system is not new, the current state of the art has not yet allowed to reach this objective. This paper describes the architectural system foundations of the European R&D GO0DMAN project where a multi-agent system is developed as the mean to provide a real-time, multi-level and multi-stage approach to reach a zero-defect production system in multi-stage environments. Particularly, the paper focuses the integration of software agents and quality control stations forming smart inspection tools, aligned with the cyber-physical systems principles. The proposed approach is validated using an electrical motor testbed, where the agent-based system allows the digitization of the running testing system in a multi-stage schema.
