- The innovation-driven economies and entrepreneurial activity through a cluster analysisPublication . Pires, José Adriano; Fernandes, Paula Odete; Lopes, JoanaA main aspect of Entrepreneurial activity is the extent to which people in a population are creating new business activity, both in absolute terms and relative to other economic activities, such as business closure. Within the realm of new business activity, different types of entrepreneurial activity can be distinguished. For example, business creation may vary by industry sector, by the size of the founding team, and by whether the new venture is legally independent of other businesses, and in terms of founder demographics, such as gender, age, or education (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, 2009). Therefore this article selects the 20 countries; classified as Innovation-Driven Economies, from 2009 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor data. By using the Entrepreneurial Activity key indicators and applying the cluster hierarchical analysis techniqu e, two clusters were found to measure differences and preliminary results show a clear measure differ ences in the level of entrepreneurial activity among countries. And according this is possible to identify policies that may enhance the national level of entrepreneurial activity in those countries.

Alves, Paulo; Amaral, Luís; Pires, José AdrianoO uso das tecnologias de e-learning faz parte do dia-a-dia dos docentes e alunos do ensino superior, mas será que estas estão a ser usadas da melhor forma, reflectindo-se numa mais valia para o processo de ensino e de aprendizagem? Aproveitando o contexto de mudança de Bolonha e através do uso do IMS Learning Design pretende-se assim mudar o paradigma de ensino para que o e-learning se torne efectivamente numa mais valia. Para isso desenvolveu-se uma nova plataforma de e-leanring mais interactiva e adaptada ao perfil do aluno, integrando agentes tutor colaborativos. A plataforma iDomus combina as características de um sistema de aprendizagem de suporte ao blended-learning com as capacidades de um sistema adaptativo baseado em agentes. Com o recurso à tecnologia AJAX foi possível dotar a plataforma de um elevado nível de interactividade.
- The role of learning styles in intelligent tutoring systemsPublication . The majority of e-learning platforms are used as mere repositories of content, based on the classroom paradigm and don’t support the individualism of each student learning process. Through the integration of new pedagogical methodologies based on students learning styles, we present an approach to intelligent tutoring systems in order to improve the learning process. This article is focused on the importance of learning styles to create the student model in intelligent tutoring systems and what was the student’s feedback about the adaptation of the system to each learning experience.
- An exploratory investigation of e-business constraints among large organizations in PortugalPublication . Morais, Elisabete Paulo; Pires, José Adriano; Gonçalves, Ramiro ManuelIt is well recognized that e-business supports all parts of an organization’s value chain, and offer valuable competitive advantages to firms. It is imperative for an organization to identify potential constraints to ebusiness in order to minimize the risk derived from its e-business initiative. Hence, in this paper, we explore a range of constraints that the literature suggests influences e-business evolution, so that organizations could be better equipped in anticipating any difficulties while in progress through their e-business initiatives. Thirteen hypotheses were formulated and tested. Questionnaires were applied to investigate the research problem. It was administered to 1000 managing directors of the biggest (according to the amount of business) Portuguese enterprises. Results suggest that organizational constraints are more critical, such as, conflict with traditional trading partners, conflict with traditional business and e-business initiatives, reengineering business processes and resistance to change, among other.

In e-commerce a large variety of large models for selling goods online has emerged. E-business and its sub-category, e-commerce were forecast to facilitate communication between potential market participants and dissolve the geographical boundaries between markets. Maturity models for Information Systems and Information Technology appeared has more than thirty years. More recently, new maturity models have been created, better adapted to new reality of e-commerce/ebusiness. With this paper we intend to describe some models oriented to e-commerce/e-business and compare them, identifying imperfections in the models. The paper concludes, that is important identifying the barriers to the development of e-business, and as they can be contouring.

The introduction of technologies in Intranets related to data warehouses, also called data webhouses, allowed the development of integrated web applications, which helps the access to the information. The Domus e-management component has in basis the organizational Intranet philosophy, giving online services which allow an optimization of time and resources. This way the Domus Intranet main objectives are: • Develop a system that integrates information systems, e-learning, e-management, workflow and groupware technologies • The Intranet intends to support an more efficient administration of educational resources, to implement new strategies
- Domus mobile: plataforma de suporte ao mobile-learningPublication . Alves, Paulo; Pires, José Adriano; Amaral, LuísEste artigo aborda o desenvolvimento da Intranet Domus, plataforma que integra tecnologias de e-learning e de emanagement e mais especificamente a componente de dispositivos móveis. Com a definição da estratégia de integração dos vários sistemas numa única plataforma, conseguiu-se uma adesão muito significativa por parte dos docentes e alunos. A segunda fase do projecto, que se encontra em desenvolvimento, consiste em tornar a plataforma compatível com o SCORM e incentivar o desenvolvimento de objectos de aprendizagem reutilizáveis. Esta plataforma possui também uma área de acesso a dispositivos móveis, que permite o suporte do mobile-learning, além de disponibilizar uma aplicação de mobilidade dos conteúdos em modo offline. O objectivo desta nova plataforma é de permitir a ubiquidade da aprendizagem e do acesso à informação e ao conhecimento, independentemente do dispositivo, do local e da existência ou não de acesso à Internet.
- A usabilidade em software educativo: princípios e técnicasPublication . Alves, Paulo; Pires, José AdrianoA usabilidade é uma área de estudo que tem vindo a crescer nos últimos anos, tendo sido a Web a sua principal impulsionadora. O termo engenharia da usabilidade passou a fazer parte do vocabulário dos programadores e designers gráficos, sendo aplicado a uma área de estudo com muitos anos que é a interacção homem-máquina, área esta que surgiu com as primeiras interfaces gráficas. Num projecto de software a usabilidade deve ser uma preocupação constante durante todo o processo de desenvolvimento. Esta deve ser vista a montante e a jusante do processo de desenvolvimento. A sua análise a montante significa que o desenho da interface deve ser baseado em princípios heurísticos, ou seja, as regras definidas. A usabilidade a jusante refere-se aos testes de campo efectuados com os utilizadores, validando ou não os princípios heurísticos. Neste artigo serão abordados os princípios heurísticos em usabilidade, assim como deverão ser conduzidos os testes com os utilizadores e a forma de avaliar esses resultados. Como caso de estudo será apresentada uma Intranet educacional.
- Broadband access technologies evaluation tool (BATET)Publication . Pereira, João Paulo; Pires, José AdrianoThe goal of this paper is to identify all the essential costs of building broadband access networks, and then to perform a comparison of different technologies in various scenarios. Different market segments (Scenarios) have different geographical characteristics and will require different amounts of access bandwidth. These different market segments will be served by alternative access technologies that minimize overall costs. In order to do this, we have developed a model framework and a evaluation tool. To measure the attractiveness of the several broadband access technologies, the proposal tool compares the costs, revenues, NPV, IRR, payback periods, etc. for three scenarios. The paper presents a techno-economic analysis of eight broadband technologies for access networks: digital subscriber line (DSL), hybrid fiber coax (HFC), power line communications (PLC), fiber to the home (FTTH), fiber to the curb (FTTC), fiber to the cabinet (FTTCab), and wireless alternatives such as WiMAX and satellite.
- Constrangimentos associados à evolução do negócio electrónico em PortugalPublication . Este artigo pretende identificar a maturidade do negócio electrónico das grandes empresas com actividade em Portugal. É objectivo deste estudo também testar um conjunto de hipóteses relacionadas quer com a maturidade quer com os próprios constrangimentos, nomeadamente se a maturidade do negócio electrónico e os constrangimentos são iguais para os vários sectores de actividade e se dependem do número de colaboradores.
