- Reflection on practices as teacher’s educators in statisticsPublication . Pires, Manuel Vara; Martins, Cristina; Barros, Paula MariaIn this presentation we reflect upon our practices as teacher educators revisiting a study we developed (Barros, Martins & Pires, 2009). The aim was (i) to identify which statistic knowledge future educators and teachers possessed when starting their training, and (ii) to assess the influence of the work undertaken in the curricular unit Numbers and Statistics in the progression of this knowledge. The study states that the development of the curricular unit has allowed students to deepen, change or consolidate their statistic’s knowledge, mainly regarding what concerns understanding concepts. But what are the reasons for this “success”? Which aspects of our practices have contributed to a real improvement of students’ learnings?

- MathE e matemática no ensino superior: possíveis abordagensPublication . Barros, Paula Maria; Pires, Manuel Vara; Martins, Cristina; Seabra, MarcelaO MathE é um projeto que envolve a colaboração entre várias instituições europeias, uma das quais o Instituto Politécnico de Bragança, e tem como objetivo principal melhorar as competências em matemática no ensino superior. Neste contexto, e partindo da criação de uma plataforma online de matemática (mathe.pixel-online.org), uma das atividades principais do projeto é disponibilizar, gratuitamente para a comunidade, diversos recursos educativos, como, por exemplo, vídeos sobre temas específicos ou sobre resolução de tarefas, conjuntos de questões de escolha múltipla, para autoavaliação por parte dos alunos ou para os professores realizarem testes de avaliação. Nesta comunicação, para além de se dar a conhecer a plataforma MathE, pretende-se debater e partilhar algumas reflexões sobre as suas potencialidades para o ensino e aprendizagem de matemática em cursos do ensino superior, que incluem no seu plano de estudos uma componente significativa de matemática.
- Knowledge about arithmetic mean: a study with future teachersPublication . Pires, Manuel Vara; Barros, Paula Maria; Martins, CristinaThroughout their school years students experience different trainings and teaching processes which influence their learning of statistic concepts and procedures, taking for granted that, especially for future teachers, these concepts should be well clarified and consolidated. This analysis has as basis a study undertaken with 40 future teachers in the 1st year of the License Degree in Basic Education. The aim was (i) to identify students’ statistical knowledge at the beginning of their degree, and (ii) to assess the influence of the intervention of the curricular unit Numbers and Statistics in the progression of this knowledge (Martins, Pires, & Barros, 2009). An investigation methodology of a qualitative kind has been followed, in which the collection of data has been conducted using a questionnaire applied at the study’s beginning, participant observation during the classes and a summative test at the end. For this presentation we selected the data related to the arithmetic mean.
