- AI innovations for travel and tourismPublication . Correia, Ricardo; Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Fontes, RutaThe tourism industry faces pressing challenges amidst the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. It is necessary to address the lack of a comprehensive understanding of AI's impact on the sector, emphasizing its role in reshaping the travel ecosystem, enhancing customer experiences, and optimizing operational efficiency. Ethical considerations surrounding AI implementation in tourism must be thoroughly examined to guide responsible technology use. AI Innovations for Travel and Tourism illuminates how AI revolutionizes travel ecosystems, beginning with an insightful introduction to AI's impact on tourism, laying the groundwork for a nuanced understanding of its transformative potential. Delving into personalized travel planning, the book navigates the reader through the intricacies of AI-enhanced destination recommendations, digging into how these technologies redefine the travel experience. Smart booking systems and travel experiences demonstrate how AI streamlines operations and raises customer satisfaction. The exploration extends to AI's role in travel marketing, emphasizing targeted campaigns and enhanced customer engagement. In-depth discussions on AI, big data, and user-generated content unveil the intricate connections that drive innovation in the industry. This book also delves into analyzing visitors' spatiotemporal behavior which provides valuable insights for destination managers and marketers. The ethical dimensions of AI-powered tourism are also discussed, exploring responsible AI use. This book is ideal for tourism scholars, educators, students, researchers, and industry professionals
- Artificial Intelligence and Visitors' Spatiotemporal BehaviourPublication . Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Correia, Ricardo; Fontes, RutaThe main purpose of this chapter is to understand how artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved in the academic literature on visitors’ spatiotemporal behaviour (STB), identifying the key thematic areas that have drawn most research interest to help academics and professionals to gain a better understanding of AI usage on this topic. The literature review was based on a search of scientific documents available on the Scopus platform concerning the use of AI on visitors’ STB studies. On a first stage the number of documents published per year and the identification of the most representative journals and authors are presented and discussed. On second stage, a content analysis was conducted, and bibliometric method such as, co-occurrence analysis, was used. The most productive and cited authors were identified and although the number of articles published is not very high, reveal some interest of researchers on this issue, particularly during 2023. The most important key thematic areas and some implications for future research were also identified and discussed.

- Exploring the potential of Flickr user–generated content for tourism research: insights from PortugalPublication . Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Santos, ArlindoThe purpose of this research is to present and discuss the methods of identifying visitors and local population in tourism studies using geotagged photos from the Flickr social network, and differentiating them according to their country of residence. This study focuses on 1,434,268 photos taken in Portugal between 2010 and 2022 and uploaded by 31,286 Flickr users. Different approaches to cleaning the database, to distinguishing tourists from locals, and to identify their country of residence were employed and discussed. After data cleaning, the photos database corresponds to 1,144,981 photos shared by 29,890 users. Using the information provided in each user’s profile and the time zone, 12,144 users (41%) were classified as visitors and 2,659 users (9%) as locals. The monthly distribution of the percentage of photos uploaded by users classified as visitors coincides with the high season of tourist activity in Portugal. The distribution of users by country of residence coincides with the main inbound markets in Portugal: Spain, United Kingdom, France and Germany. Building on a country-wide case study, the contribution of this paper is a refined understanding of the use of Flickr usergenerated content in tourism studies, proposing a frame-work to facilitate all researchers to use this data source more frequently.
- Promotion of destinations through interactive digital marketing: collaborative model for smart citiesPublication . Cunha, Carlos R.; Mendonça, Vítor; Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Carneiro, ManuelaSmart cities are, by nature, spaces with a richness and diversity of technologies incorporated in their physical spaces, in such a way that they can be seen as a single intelligent and collaborative space. As technological pillars, two important layers arise – the sensory layer and the actuator layer, both of which are strongly interconnected with each other, emerging as a large Internet of Things network. This scenario reveals an enormous potential for marketing science and for the creation of innovative strategies to promote territories as touristic destinations. Within the multiple opportunities, there is space for the development of an interactive marketing experience, revolutionizing, through creative rethink, the way destinations interact with their visitors, and make known all their potential. Although in the context of tourism, there are three main moments in the visit process – the before, the during and the after, this work focuses on the moment of the destination visit – the during. In order to understand how creative rethink can be carried out to create innovative strategies to promote touristic destinations, an introduction is carried out, substantiating the concepts of digital marketing, smart cities and Internet of Things. Then, the methodology that governed the creation of a collaborative model for smart cities is clearly defined, being contextualized the importance of destinations-communication, the concept of a smart city and some of the major technology that support this concept. After contextualization and methodological aspects, this article presents a conceptual model where its components are described and where it is discussed how the model can take advantage of the variety of technologies that exist in a smart city, in order to allow innovative digital marketing strategies and innovating in the interaction between the city and the visitant, and vice versa – the vision of interactive digital marketing. In the model discussion, some interaction-scenarios and their main benefits are highlighted, which serve as examples for validating the proposed model. Finally, we present the work limitations and mains conclusions.
