  • Tracking technologies in tourism: a bibliometric and content review

    Understanding how tourists move within a destination can give an important contribution to the planning and management of destinations, particularly in terms of their impacts. Therefore, studying the spatial and temporal behaviour of tourists, namely their physical movements in space and time, implies resorting to a set of techniques that enable the tracking of their movements. This paper intends to identify the most important tracking technologies on tourism research and its major advantages and disadvantages. Based on a literature review, this study provides a critical review of the most important tracking technologies in tourism research divided into two phases, a quantitative analysis based on the Scopus database and a bibliometric analysis coupled with a manual analysis of documents (content analysis).
  • Tracking wine tourists’ movements using gps: evidence from the bairrada wine route, Portugal

    The chapter discusses the application and value of GPS (Global Positioning System) for tracking tourists’ movements in rural wine tourism destinations using data collected on the Bairrada wine route, Portugal. The chapter analyses the theoretical underpinning for collecting and analysing data for tracking people’s space-time movements, and then identifies the challenges that GPS entails when applied in rural areas for developing wine tourism from visitors’ surveys for enriching mobility insights. It explains the benefits of using GIS cartography combined with additional spatially referenced data for identifying and analysi ng movement patterns. The chapter concludes by discussing the practical implications of the study findings in helping destination managers to make better data-informed decisions regarding regional planning and sustainable tourism development.
  • Fostering a better spatial distribution of tourism: using geotagged photos to shape the coopetition network

    This study examines network coopetition strategies to promote the spatial distribution of tourists and their importance for Destination Management Organisations (DMOs). Geotagged photos from the municipality of Porto, Portugal (n = 152,312) uploaded to the Flickr social network between 2010 and 2022 were utilised, and thematic maps were produced using geographic information systems (GISs). Residents and visitors were identified and separated, employing a heuristic approach with a five-day threshold between the first and last photo of each user. The findings indicate an uneven distribution of tourists within the destination, with a notable concentration of accommodation, attractions and visitors in the historic centre. The establishment of a coopetition network could contribute to the dispersion of activity.
