  • Laboratório de Jogos
Publication . Pacheco, Maria F.; Pereira, Ana I.; Fernandes, Florbela P.
  • Overview of robotic based system for rehabilitation and healthcare
Publication . Chellal, Arezki Abderrahim; Lima, José; Fernandes, Florbela P.; Gonçalves, José; Pacheco, Maria F.; Monteiro, Fernando C.
As in many other fields, robots are increasingly being used in the healthcare sector, particularly for hospital logistics support, surgery and rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is a concern for millions of people around the world, and because of this, there has been a constant progress over the last decade in the rehabilitation robotics field, with the use of new technologies aimed at overcoming the different challenges faced in this field. In this sense, this paper reviews the main applications developed in the last ten years of rehabilitation robotics, as well as the different challenges that still need to be addressed in order to achieve the design of a prototype that is easy to use, small, safe, less costly and brings real added value to this field. Much of the efforts of the researchers in this topics is focused on providing as many DOF and ROM as possible, and also on the designing of new robots control algorithms.
  • Analysis of the workforce Skills for the factories of the future
Publication . Leitão, Paulo; Geraldes, Carla A.S.; Fernandes, Florbela P.; Badikyan, Hasmik
Industry 4.0 is promoting the digitisation of manufacturing sector towards smart and more efficient factories, seen worldwide as the fourth industrial revolution. However, its complete adoption strongly depends on the skills that existing workforce and future professionals can have in the different dimensions of this multidisciplinary vision, contributing to increase the digital maturity level of companies from the industrial sector. Additionally, new job profiles are emerging to face the implementation of these innovative approaches, which implies the need for the re-qualification and up-skilling of existing workforce, particularly focusing the digital skills. In this context, this paper analyses the gap and impact in the non-technical and technical skills required for the successful transition into digitisation, particularly across six manufacturing areas covering the collaborative robotics (cobots), additive manufacturing, mechatronics and machine automation, data analytics, cybersecurity and humanmachine interface.
  • Map coverage of LoRaWAN signal’s employing GPS from mobile devices
Publication . Brito, Thadeu; Mendes, João; Zorawski, Matheus; Azevedo, Beatriz Flamia; Khalifeh, Ala'; Fernandes, Florbela P.; Pereira, Ana I.; Lima, José; Costa, Paulo Gomes da
Forests are remote areas with uneven terrain, so it is costly to map the range of signals that enable the implementation of systems based on wireless and long-distance communication. Even so, the interest in Internet of Things (IoT) functionalities for forest monitoring systems has increasingly attracted the attention of several researchers. This work demonstrates the development of a platform that uses the GPS technology of mobile devices to map the signals of a LoRaWAN Gateway. Therefore, the proposed system is based on concatenating two messages to optimize the LoRaWAN transmission using the Global Position System (GPS) data from a mobile device. With the proposed approach, it is possible to guarantee the data transmission when finding the ideal places to fix nodes regarding the coverage of LoRaWAN because the Gateway bandwidth will not be fulfilled. The tests indicate that different changes in the relief and large bodies drastically affect the signal provided by the Gateway. This work demonstrates that mapping the Gateway’s signal is essential to attach modules in the forest, agriculture zones, or even smart cities.

  • Multistart coupled with a derivative-free filter local search for locating multiple solutions
Publication . Fernandes, Florbela P.; Pereira, Ana I.; Costa, Maria F.P.; Fernandes, Edite M.G.P.
A multistart technique coupled with a derivative-free lter local search algorithm for locating all the optimal solutions of a nonconvex constrained optimization is presented. To reach a fast convergence to the optimal solutions, the local search procedure is based on descent directions. The lter-set concept is introduced to handle the constraints of the problem. The generated direction vector is descent for the objective function if the sample point is feasible; otherwise, it is descent for the constraint violation. Numerical experiments with benchmark problems are reported and a comparison with other stochastic methods is included.
  • Evaluating student behaviour on the mathE platform - clustering algorithms approaches
Publication . Azevedo, Beatriz Flamia; Rocha, Ana Maria A.C.; Fernandes, Florbela P.; Pacheco, Maria F.; Pereira, Ana I.
The MathE platform is an online educational platform that aims to help students who struggle to learn college mathematics as well as students who wish to deepen their knowledge on subjects that rely on a strong mathematical background, at their own pace. The MathE platform is currently being used by a significant number of users, from all over the world, as a tool to support and engage students, ensuring new and creative ways to encourage them to improve their mathematical skills. This paper is addressed to evaluate the students’ performance on the Linear Algebra topic, which is a specific topic of the MathE platform. In order to achieve this goal, four clustering algorithms were considered; three of them based on different bio-inspired techniques and the k-means algorithm. The results showed that most students choose to answer only basic level questions, and even within that subset, they make a lot of mistakes. When students take the risk of answering advanced questions, they make even more mistakes, which causes them to return to the basic level questions. Considering these results, it is now necessary to carry out an in-depth study to reorganize the available questions according to other levels of difficulty, and not just between basic and advanced levels as it is.
  • Numerical experiments with nonconvex MINLP problems
Publication . Fernandes, Florbela P.; Costa, Maria F.P.; Fernandes, Edite M.G.P.
We present a methodology to solve nonconvex Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming problems, that combines the Branch-and-Bound and simulated annealing type methods, which was implemented in MATLAB. A set of benchmark functions with simple bounds and different dimensions was used to analyze its practical behaviour. We exhibit computational results showing the good performance of the method.
  • Parameter estimation of the kinetic α -pinene isomerization model using the MCSfilter algorithm
Publication . Amador, Andreia; Fernandes, Florbela P.; Santos, Lino O.; Romanenko, Andrey; Rocha, Ana Maria A.C.
This paper aims to illustrate the application of a derivative- free multistart algorithm with coordinate search filter, designated as the MCSFilter algorithm. The problem used in this study is the parameter estimation problem of the kinetic α-pinene isomerization model. This is a well known nonlinear optimization problem (NLP) that has been investigated as a case study for performance testing of most derivative based methods proposed in the literature. Since the MCSFilter algorithm features a stochastic component, it was run ten times to solve the NLP problem. The optimization problem was successfully solved in all the runs and the optimal solution demonstrates that in all runs the MCSFilter provides a good quality solution.
