  • Combining IoT and users’ profiles to provide contextualized information and services
Publication . Fernandes, Daniel; Cunha, Carlos R.; Gomes, João Pedro; Santos, Arlindo
Technological evolution has led to the emergence of a set of solutions suitable to support mobility and ubiquity scenarios. Wireless computing and mobile devices together with the miniaturization of sensors and actuators, which are now embedded in physical spaces, are today’s reality. This phenomenon opened the door to a set of opportunities for reengineering how we perceive a given fact or situation and how we act on it. With regard to the delivery of information to users of a given physical space, there is now the possibility of radically transforming the mechanisms of interaction between the space and the user, redesigning the entire experience of interaction. This change allows the user to see the physical space around him adapt to himself and provide him with contextualized and personalized information according to his profile of interest. This approach can improve the way we manage customer relationships in a given business context. This article presents an overview of the state of the art of intelligent spaces and analyzes the potential of indoor positioning systems and techniques, and proposes a conceptual model for the detection of users in physical spaces and the consequent adaptation of an intelligent physical space to provide information aligned with the user's interest profile and in accordance with their privacy rules.
  • Understanding the value of digital marketing tools for SMEs
Publication . Morais, Elisabete Paulo; Cunha, Carlos R.; Santos, Arlindo
Digital marketing is gaining predominance in marketing strategies across the globe. Digitization is becoming more and more present in business, not just changes in consumer behavior, but the adoption of new technologies, tools, and applications is highly disruptive, with immediate impact on the business of all companies. The common link between digital marketing definitions is the use of tools, namely online tools. One of the biggest changes in human interaction is the recent proliferation of online social networks. Rapid growth of web-based platforms that facilitate online social behavior has significantly modified the nature of human activities, habitats, and interactions. Real-world social relationships have been migrated to the virtual world, resulting in online communities that bring people together from across the globe. This study aims to identify and describe the various digital marketing tools and which of these can be used to increase the SMEs competitiveness.

  • Digital communication on higher education institutions: challenges and tools for research
Publication . Santos, Arlindo; Lopes, Luisa; Brasil, Marcus
Changes in the Higher Education (HE) paradigm in Portugal, have made the sector competitive where different Higher Education Institutions (HEI) adapt marketing strategies to foster their education offer and differentiation factors in order to attract and maintain a higher number of students. With the increasing reduction in birth rates in Portugal, the investment on internationalization becomes a need in order to maintain the number of students. At the same time, the rapid proliferation of communication technologies affected the recruitment of new students and the communication strategies of HEI. The Instituto Politécnico de Bragança (IPB), being aware of this reality and recognizing the importance of digital communication tools, established in its strategic plan 2018–2022 objectives related to its internal and external communication in the digital context. For that purpose, various tools of research were conceptualized and implemented on an earlier phase of a digital communication plan. The originality and contribution of this work is to open this research methodology to the public sphere looking for critical analysis and construction.
  • Exploring the potential of Flickr user–generated content for tourism research: insights from Portugal
Publication . Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Santos, Arlindo
The purpose of this research is to present and discuss the methods of identifying visitors and local population in tourism studies using geotagged photos from the Flickr social network, and differentiating them according to their country of residence. This study focuses on 1,434,268 photos taken in Portugal between 2010 and 2022 and uploaded by 31,286 Flickr users. Different approaches to cleaning the database, to distinguishing tourists from locals, and to identify their country of residence were employed and discussed. After data cleaning, the photos database corresponds to 1,144,981 photos shared by 29,890 users. Using the information provided in each user’s profile and the time zone, 12,144 users (41%) were classified as visitors and 2,659 users (9%) as locals. The monthly distribution of the percentage of photos uploaded by users classified as visitors coincides with the high season of tourist activity in Portugal. The distribution of users by country of residence coincides with the main inbound markets in Portugal: Spain, United Kingdom, France and Germany. Building on a country-wide case study, the contribution of this paper is a refined understanding of the use of Flickr usergenerated content in tourism studies, proposing a frame-work to facilitate all researchers to use this data source more frequently.
One of the current challenges of the Internet derives from the fact that the WAP technology allows the use of mobile devices to access information available on the Internet shaped according to a specific standard. However mobile devices only access multimedia content if it is configured according to a standard which differs from that used for personal computers. And one of the existing obstacles for the success of WAP technology is, without any doubt, the lack of content when compared to the quantity of information available in the Web. It is therefore necessary to create packages to adapt the existing Web information or simply to allow the development of dedicated content. This thesis has got the main purpose of introducing a package for the automatic conversion of content available on the World Wide Web to the WAP environment, and thus allow mobile users to have access to information that until now was only available through personal computers. In order to accomplish the development of this package, it was necessary to investigate methods and techniques that may be used in the process of converting Web documents language (HTML) to WAP standard language (WML).
  • Using data analytics to understand visitors online search interests: the case of Douro Museum
Publication . Carvalho, Aida; Santos, Arlindo; Cunha, Carlos R.
Regional museums are relatively recent museum structures that emerged in the late 19th century after universal exhibitions. They are museums specifically dedicated to the representation of a given population in a specific territorial context, highlighting the fundamental traits that characterize the nature and essence of that community, differentiating it from others. In northern Portugal, Law no. 125/97 created the Douro Museum, a territory museum that represents the natural and cultural heritage of the demarcated Douro region, the first demarcated and regulated region of the world, in 1756, by Marques de Pombal, extending over an area of of 250,000 hectares, between Barqueiros and Barca d'Alva, along the Douro River and its tributaries. The museum has a “polynuclear structure distributed throughout the Douro region, based in Peso da Régua” (art. 2), serving as an element for mobilizing tourists, mainly through its main temporary exhibitions, videos, etc. In an information society, characterized by the empowerment of citizens with regard to their ability to independently obtain information and, in the process, to leave their footprint, it is crucial to understand and anticipate their interests. In this way, the supply and responsiveness of tourism agents and regional actors will be increased, making them better able to decide for an offer better suited to the real interests of visitors and even enable to influence them. This article aims to know the profile of tourists / consumers through their online behavior, trying to understand what kind of information they are looking for, which keywords are most used and searched using the fundamentals of Data Analytics and using the Google Trends tool. Moreover, this study enables to better understand the connection between online search interests and the reality of the Douro Museum visitants. This approach is nowadays a major contribute to bridge the gap between visitors needs/interests and tourism player’s strategies definition, making Data Analytics a fundamental tool to enable decision support systems.
  • An application framework for a situation-aware system support for smart spaces
Publication . Santos, Arlindo; Rodrigues, Helena
Despite a considerable research e ort towards system support for smart spaces, in recent years we have been witnessing a growing perception about a persistent gap between the promises of the area and its real achievements. We are investigating a situation-aware system support for smart spaces that builds on a new set of assumptions and design principles, based on user-controlled associations between global services and local resources. The realisation of this concept raises important challenges across a model for global autonomous applications that enables them to integrate the functionality and resources of multiple situations. This research work aims at investigating such a model and evaluating the concept of situation-aware system support for smart spaces.
