- Addressing the Challenges of Integrating Artificial Intelligence in Project ManagementPublication . Almeida, Pedro; Freitas, Filipa; Fernandes, Gabriela; Santos, José M.R.C.A.; Moniz, SamuelIn recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been transforming various fields, including Project Management (PM). While AI offers significant benefits to PM, its implementation also presents several challenges. This paper explores some of the main barriers faced by organizations when integrating AI into PM practice. Through a review of current literature, this study identifies major challenges, such as the creation of unemployment, the need for upskilled project managers, erosion capabilities of project managers, ethical issues, high initial investment, security and data privacy concerns, and data availability. By analyzing these challenges, this paper provides insights into strategic approaches for overcoming them, emphasizing the importance of change management strategies, investment in training, development of clear ethical regulations, and the highlighting the need for Project managers to develop a versatile skills set that balances technical proficiency with human-centric skills like empathy, adaptability, collaborative mindset, and emotional intelligence. These findings help to equip PM professionals with the necessary knowledge to navigate through the complexities of AI implementation effectively, while also guides scholars for future research on this emergent field.
- An Assessment of Food Consumption Practices in the Mozambican Provinces of Inhambane and Gaza: Implications for Mycotoxin Exposure RiskPublication . The paucity of research and the absence of monitoring programs exacerbate the population’s risk of exposure. This study aimed to describe the dietary habits of populations in Gaza and Inhambane provinces and to investigate potential differences in average monthly consumption by province, place of residence, sex, and age group. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed, involving 55 households and a total of 300 individuals (Gaza: n=151; Inhambane: n=149). Data were collected using a food frequency questionnaire. The analysis revealed that household diets were predominantly composed of “Dairy products” where milk stood out, “Vegetables and greens”, notably onions and lettuce/watercress, “Beverages”, primarily water and tea, “Fruits”, such as mango, fresh tomato, and banana, “Bread, cereals and related products”, particularly rice, “Eggs, meat and fish”, namely fresh fish and eggs. Furthermore, the most consumed fats and sweets are oils and sugar, respectively. Statistically significant differences were observed between provinces: Inhambane exhibited higher consumption of “Dairy products”, “Fruits”, and “Beverages”. The results showed that consumption patterns across most food groups were dependent by place of residence. Additionally, sex and age were associated with different consumption of “Dairy products” and “Beverages”, respectively. These findings provide a comprehensive overview of dietary patterns in Gaza and Inhambane provinces and underscore the widespread consumption of foods vulnerable to mycotoxin contamination. The results offer a critical foundation for developing targeted sampling strategies to assess fungal and mycotoxin contamination and for conducting risk assessments of population exposure.
- Beyond the Bench: The Professional Identity of Research Management and AdministrationPublication . Santos, José M.R.C.A.; Varela, Carolina; Fischer, Melinda; Kerridge, SimonThis study addresses the dearth of theoretical stances on the professional status of research managers and administrators (RMAs) based at higher education institutions and at other science-related organizations. Using the lens of ’narrative identities’ theory, it explores their professional identity in contemporary neoliberal research and innovation ecosystems. Through semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, the study examines whether RMAs consistently articulate a distinct professional identity. Findings reveal that RMAs exhibit a strong sense of purpose, navigating dynamic professional trajectories infuenced by both public management structures and personal motivations. Despite recognizing their unique expertise, RMAs face identity tensions that bridge academia and other professional spheres. The study highlights the growing need to professionalize RMAs and the potential for more formal recognition of their role.

Thus, this role has become not just increasingly visible but also to some extent even acknowledged by leading stakeholders (e.g. policy makers such as the European Commission). RMA professionals are the individuals and teams who, behind the scenes, enable and enhance the entire research lifecycle, from grant applications to impact realization and everything in between, including science diplomacy, science communication, and research strategy development (Agostinho et al., 2020).
- Consumer preferences for olive oil in the Iberian PeninsulaPublication . Baviera-Puig, Amparo; Lopéz-Cortés, Isabel; Pereira, José Alberto; Rodrigues, NunoThis study aims to analyse consumer preferences in the iberian Peninsula by comparing two important european Union-producing countries. in order to be able to make valid cross-cultural comparisons, we used the Best-Worst Scaling (BWS) methodology. We also performed segmentation using latent cluster analysis (lca), including all consumers analysed, regardless of country of origin, to obtain three different segments. comparing both consumers, the significant differences obtained refer to the quality-price ratio, willingness to pay and attributes considered at the time of purchase of olive oil. owing to the BWS methodology, we observe that the number of attributes that establish significant differences between the three segments (taste, brand name and packaging) is higher than in the analysis performed by country (brand name). The 3 segments obtained (“Type-experience consumers,” “external cues consumers” and “Taste seekers”) prioritise the proposed attributes differently and there are significant differences between them in terms of olive oil consumption (place of purchase and average weekly consumption). These conclusions have implications at the business level for the design and development of marketing strategies in the olive oil sector in both countries.
- Exploring Phlomis crinita extracts: HPLC analysis, phenolic content, antioxidant and antimicrobial potentialsPublication . (P. crinita), known as " Khayat el-djerah " in Algerian folk medicine, is used for wound healing and abdominal pain relief. This study assessed the phytochemical profile, phenolic content, antimicrobial activity against five Gram-negative and three Gram-positive clinical bacterial strains, as well as in vitro antioxidant activity of hydroethanolic extracts from leaves (HLE), flowers (HFE), and rhizomes (HRE) of P. crinita. Fifteen phenolic compounds such as four flavonoids, trans-cinnamic acid, six cinnamic acid derivatives, and four benzoic acid derivatives were identified for the first time in P. crinita by HPLC-DAD, with quantitative differences among the analyzed parts. HRE exhibited high levels of total phenolics (262.97 ± 16.2 μg GAE/mg DW) and flavonoids (71.87 ± 3.25 μg QE/mg DW), while HLE had the highest flavonols content (18.89 ± 5.12 μg QE/mg DW). All extracts demonstrated strong antioxidant properties. HLE exhibited the highest potency, with IC50 values of 15.46 ± 0.45 µg/mL (DPPH) and 11.71 ± 0.50 µg/mL (ABTS). HLE exhibited good reducing power (FRAP A0.5 = 40.07 ± 2.82 µg/mL), while HRE showed the best reducing power (Phenanthroline A0.5 = 7.88 ± 1.63 µg/mL). All extracts revealed broad-spectrum antibacterial effects, and HRE exhibited the most potent activity against Enterococcus faecalis, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 1.25 mg/mL. These results showed that P. crinita could be useful as source of bioactive compounds for pharmaceutical and food industry.

Frazão-Moreira, Amélia; Castro, José; Amieira, João; Aleixo-Pais, Isa G.; Castro, João Paulo; Castro, MarinaEste livro apresenta a atividade da pastorícia na sua relação com o ambiente e a paisagem no Parque Natural de Montesinho, através das experiências dos pastores e pastoras que aí habitam e percorrem diariamente o território para pastorear os seus gados. Disseminando ao grande público parte dos resultados do projeto interdisciplinar PASTOpraxis - Adaptação local da pastorícia às alterações climáticas (FCT-MTS/CAC/0028/2020), neste livro de pendor etnográfico descrevem-se aspetos da vida dos pastores, não só os referentes às dimensões económicas e técnicas das unidades de produção, como os concernentes às relações com os elementos não humanos - animais (cabras e ovelhas de raças autóctones, cães e animais selvagens), plantas e elementos abióticos -, e as mudanças decorrentes dos processos de transformação social e das incertezas climáticas. O livro cumpre, assim, um duplo objetivo: devolver a pesquisa aos colaboradores do projeto e divulgar a realidade da pastorícia rompendo com a visão estigmatizada e passadista que perpassa foros públicos e políticos.
