- Categorizing Students of the MathE Platform: A Fuzzy Clustering PerspectivePublication . Leite, Gabriel A.; Azevedo, Beatriz Flamia; Pacheco, Maria F.; Fernandes, Florbela P.; Pereira, Ana I.Active learning and technology integration offer enhanced student engagement and adaptive learning, accommodating diverse preferences. This work uses fuzzy clustering method to analyze the data of students who answer questions on the MathE platform. To do this, the Fuzzy c-means algorithm was used, which allows flexibility and adaptability in the clustering partitioning, especially in situations where data elements may exhibit overlapping characteristics or belong to multiple categories. Thereby, two datasets are considered: the first is composed of 121 students who answered questions from the Vector Space subtopic, and the second dataset comprises the answers of 297 students who answered to any topic or subtopic of the platform. The results show that the fuzzy clustering method is appropriate for analyzing the student’s data since most students are highly associated with more than one cluster. Besides, the findings can support the formulation of intervention strategies to improve the student’s academic achievement.
- Development of a chatbot to support an university institutional websitePublication . Sampaio, Telmo; Oliveira, Pedro Filipe; Matos, PauloCurrently, the institutional website of the Polytechnic Institute of Braganc¸a (IPB) lacks an interactive system that allows users to obtain information quickly and efficiently. With the increase in the use of online services and the preference of students for instant interactions, there is a growing need for tools that facilitate communication and access to information. This work proposes the development of a chatbot to support the IPB website, with the aim of improving user experience and providing quick and accurate answers to their queries. The main objective of this project is to create an inteligente chatbot capable of understanding and responding to a wide range of questions related to IPB. To achieve this, modern natural language processing and machine learning technologies such as Streamlit, Langchain, and OpenAI are used. The system includes an automated Web Scraper to keep information up-to-date, an architecture based on efficient document segmentation, and an administrative back office for monitoring and management. This development represents a significant advance in how users interact with the IPB website, offering a more efficient and accessible communication channel. The chatbot has the potential to reduce the workload of administrative staff while improving user satisfaction by providing accurate and instant answers to their questions.
- Digital innovation in tourism: exploring the potential of chatbotsPublication . Lopes, Isabel Maria; Guarda, Teresa; Oliveira, Pedro; Fernandes, Paula OdeteIn the last decade there has been a substantial increase in references to Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI has entered people’s lives, without them often realizing it. AI is increasingly present in our lives and in our daily lives, from our homes, transport, travel, industry, etc. It is inseparable to talk about AI without talking about chatbots. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to study the potential of chatbots in the tourism industry. For this purpose, a questionnaire was carried out among Higher Education students in Portugal, as it is understood that it is a good universe of study, since these technologies are still more associated with young audiences. On the other hand, also as a result of programs such as Erasmus, these young people travel more and are more aware of the potential of chatbots in tourism. The results of the questionnaire are presented in light of the literature and the responses collected, as well as the limitations of the present study. Future work that may mitigate the limitations of this research work are also presented.
- Effective solution based learning - report of the experimental resultsPublication . Matos, Paulo; Alves, Rui; Oliveira, Pedro Filipe; Gonçalves, JoséThe authors present the Effective Solution Based Learning, which derives from Project-Based Learning but is applied to real problems in order to build e!ective solutions. Emphasis is placed on the effectiveness on the assumption that encourages greater involvement and commitment on the part of students, ensuring a context that is intended to be more attractive and close to what will be their professional reality. Effectiveness is measured by the functionalities considered essential for solving the problem, but also the viability of the solution to be effectively used after the end of development, without the need for continued student involvement. A brief summary of the methodology is presented in the paper, emphasizing, in particular, the criteria and requirements for choosing project themes. The results of the first year of evaluation are also presented in the paper, pointing to a clear reduction in dropouts and an increase in approved students. Considering that this is achieved with more demand and work, it is arguable that it also resulted in students with more knowledge and skills. The authors also include in this paper the results of a survey done to the students, after the project conclusion, to assess the students’ perspective on this methodology.
- Enhancing video projector connectivity and management with a low-cost solutionPublication . Paulo, Fabio Fraga; Oliveira, Pedro Filipe; Matos, PauloThe video projector serves as an essential device for various purposes, such as education, corporate functions, and conferences. This article presents an affordable setup aimed at upgrading video projection equipment, including older models, with enhanced management and sharing features. The proposed solution tackles frequent connectivity challenges arising from differences in connectors, transmission methods, and mismatches in configurations (like frequency and resolution) between computers and projectors. Such incompatibilities often result in delays and hinder the effective use of video projectors. By incorporating a Raspberry Pi and three dedicated applications, this system introduces an intuitive solution that supports innovative teaching and work methods.
- Evolution of Demand for Portuguese Thermal Spas: An Exploratory Data Analysis of Administrative DataPublication . Alves, Jéssica; Alves, Maria José; Nunes, AlcinaWell-being or positive health is not a new concept; However, since the mid-twentieth century, scientific institutions have addressed the issue and its implications for medicine and public health. It can be observed that wellness and healthy living are becoming more and more important in society. Consequently, there is na increased need to look for products and services that mitigate the risk of these diseases associated with modern society. Thus, a fusion between tourism and wellness emerges, with thermal spas being an essential factor in the health and wellness promotion equation. In Portugal, thermal services are well known. However, the demand for its services is subject to difficulties well observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is fundamental to characterize the Portuguese thermal market on the demand side to segment it and find the best strategy to meet the user needs. Secondly, it is relevant to understand the weight of each segment in the market. Focusing on the division between classic thermal services—considered therapeutical health services—and wellness services provided by Portuguese termal establishments, this research aims to characterize the thermal market on the demand side. In particular, the study seeks to understand how wellness services are evolving regarding the total demand for Portuguese thermal establishments. Based on the descriptive analysis of administrative data of registers in all the Portuguese termal establishments, it is possible to conclude that the increasing demand for thermalism products and services (both therapeutic and wellness) suffered a severe crash with the financial crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic. Age is an essential factor that distinguishes the market segment of the therapeutic thermal offer. The consumers of such a thermal component are older than the ones demanding wellness services. Finally, specific international markets (France, Spain, and the United Kingdom) become more important in the user’s segments.
- Innovation and creativity in tourism, business and social sciencesPublication . Nunes, AlcinaThe accommodation and food services sector is vital to Portugal’s tourism industry, contributing significantly to economic output and employment. This study analyses the sector’s business dynamics from 2004 to 2022, focusing on key indicators such as business entry, exit, and survival rates. The research uses recent administrative data to examine in an exploratory manner how businesses within the sector have responded to significant economic challenges, including the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings reveal a resilient yet evolving sector, with a noticeable shift towards corporate consolidation and a decline in sole proprietorships. The study highlights the sector’s sensitivity to economic fluctuations, underscoring the need for strategic planning and policy intervention to support sustained growth and stability. These insights provide valuable guidance for policymakers and industry stakeholders seeking to navigate future economic uncertainties and foster a more robust accommodation and food services sector in Portugal.
- Profiling the employment and wage features on the portuguese accommodation and food services activities before and after the COVID-19 pandemicPublication . Nunes, AlcinaAccording to the Tourism Agency of the United Nations (UN Tourism), in most regions of the world, women comprise most of the tourism workforce and tend to concentrate on the lowest-paid and lowest-status jobs in tourism. Indeed, literature recognises that tourism is one of the sectors with a feminised labour force. In Portugal, tourism is a crucial sector of the Portuguese economy and contributes significantly to wealth and job creation. This paper analyses the sector's employment and wage characteristics before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on wage gender disparities. Using data from the National Statistical Office (INE), the study highlights the sector's susceptibility to economic shifts and the exacerbation of existing wage inequalities due to the pandemic. The analysis reveals that while the sector experienced severe job losses and wage declines during the pandemic, there has been a gradual recovery, albeit with persistent gender wage gaps and a high reliance on part-time employment. The findings underscore the need for targeted policy measures to support the sector’s resilience and promote gender equality in the workforce, ensuring a more equitable recovery in the post-pandemic period.
