- Digital Marketing as a Tool to Promote Rural Tourism Ventures: The Case of Casa da LagoaPublication . Ribeiro, Mafalda; Esteves, Elsa Tavares; Morais, Elisabete PauloRural Tourism emerges as a unique tourism product, capable of attracting the attention of tourists to rural areas whose tourist potential is considerable, but which is sometimes not well used. For this reason, companies operating in rural tourism must adopt specific measures to be able to promote their product/service, and the tourist destination itself, being able to use the various digital marketing tools for the same purpose. In this sense, the main objective of this paper is to analyse the presence of Casa da Lagoa, Portugal, in the different social media, through an exploratory analysis of its website and a quantitative analysis of the other social media used by the company
- Effect of the Accounting Standard Adopted on the Quality of Financial Information of Companies in the Restaurant SectorPublication .
- The interdependence of visitors’ information sources and activities performed in protected areas: a perspective from Portugal and CroatiaPublication . Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Esteves, Salete; Radovic, Tihana Cegur; This research aims to analyse the relationship between the sources of infor-mation used before and during the visit, visitors’ sociodemographic characteristics, and the number of activities carried out at the destinations. Through a convenience sampling technique, an online and onsite questionnaire was conducted on 408 indi-viduals who visited protected areas within the districts of Vila Real and Bragança, Portugal, and within the Karlovac County region, Croatia, in the last 5 years. Data were analysed using the statistical software Jamovi 2.2.5, an open statistical software employing both univariate and multivariate statistical methods. The results show that younger visitors used more online search engines to search for information about nature destinations. There is also a significant positive relationship between visitors who use online search engines before and during the visit to protected areas and the number of activities they do. The contribution of this paper is a refined understanding of nature-based visitors in the north-east of Portugal and in the continental part of Croatia, regions with an extraordinary potential for nature tourism. Practitioners and academics can use the results to attract and retain different market segments in these protected areas.
- Reassessing Master's Program Dropouts in Tourism: Is the labor market failing to compensate for the effort?Publication . Fernandes, Joana M.S.R.; Esteves, Salete; Each year, more students are enrolling in postgraduate degree pro-grams. However, many students will fail to complete the degree and drop out. Dropout results in economic and psychological repercussions and potentially hin-ders career advancement. Despite increasing enrolment in postgraduate pro-grams, existing studies predominantly focus on the undergraduate level. Still, master's students, assumed to possess maturity and experience, exhibit lower completion rates. This study focuses on master's students in tourism, a critical sector for countries reliant on skilled professionals. The research aims to eluci-date the factors influencing dropout decisions and students' perceptions regarding the economic implications. Findings suggest that motivation for pursuing a mas-ter's degree in tourism is often driven more by personal satisfaction than purely financial considerations. Furthermore, these graduates may not receive the ex-pected recognition for their advanced qualifications upon entering the labour market. As such, comprehensive analysis in tourism education is imperative to address dropout issues effectively and better align educational outcomes with job market demands.
- Residents’ perception of tourism development: a perspective from a low-density territoryPublication . Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Martins, Catarina Antónia; Alves, JorgeThis study explores residents' perceptions of tourism development in the Mirandela municipality, Portugal. The research aims to understand tourism's socio-cultural and economic impacts from the residents' perspective, considering both positive and negative effects. The study employs a quantitative approach through the survey of 358 residents. Findings reveal that younger residents (<30) have a more positive perception of tourism's impacts, and those with undergraduate studies have less favourable perceptions. Rural residents have more positive perceptions than urban residents, and there is no significant difference in perceptions between those involved in tourist activities and those not involved. Residents who view tourism as beneficial showed higher mean scores across several items than those who view tourism as harmful or neutral. No significant differences were found regarding the increase in the cost of living. This research highlights the importance of involving local communities in tourism planning and development to ensure balanced and sustainable growth. The conclusions present several practical and managerial implications and provide actionable recommendations for policymakers and professionals in tourism, sustainable development, and community planning.
- Tourwise Project: The Potential of Incentive Strategies on Tourists’ Space–Time Behaviour in Urban DestinationsPublication . Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Costa, Rui Augusto da; Correia, Ricardo; Costa, Adriano;Urban tourism has been growing in such a way that it has contributed to increased tourist pressure in some areas—a consequence of the high concentration of visitors in time and space. Since mobility is fundamental to tourism and the knowl-edge of how tourists consume and experience an urban destination is very important for its sustainable management, it is relevant to develop strategies to disperse visitors from places with high concentration to other places without a high concentration. The aim of this article is to understand the impact of incentives on the spatiotem-poral behaviour of visitors, which refers to how tourists move and spend their time in a destination in a historic city classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and disseminate an innovative research project and discuss its operationalisation and expected results based on the literature review already conducted. Framed in a research model, this project could contribute important to Destination Manage-ment Organisations (DMOs). The use of incentives could help in the more efficient management of tourist flows in more congested areas, contributing to an improve-ment in the quality of life of residents and an improvement in the quality of the visiting experience for tourists.
- Unlocking european funds to boost rural tourismPublication . Fernandes, Joana M.S.R.; Nogueira, Sónia P.The difficulty in attracting tourists to less-explored regions, such as rural areas, stems from many factors, including limited infrastructure, sparse amenities, a lack of visibility in the tourism industry, and limited accessibility discouraging potential visitors. Despite offering natural beauty, cultural richness, and unique expe riences, urban and coastal destinations often overshadow rural regions. Additionally, the lack of modern amenities and accommodations deters tourists who prioritise convenience and comfort. Regional entities must collaborate on effective strategies and targeted promotional campaigns to overcome these barriers. Highlighting unique aspects such as pristine landscapes, cultural festivals, and historical landmarks can reshape perceptions of rural travel. Leveraging digital platforms and social media can broaden the audience and attract more visitors. This paper proposes developing an online platform to structure tourism products in the cross-border regions of Northern Portugal and Castile and Leo´n in Spain. These regions share common challenges and advantages, and cooperation can enhance sustainable and ecological tourism. The platform will provide comprehensive tourist information about available resources, stimulate visitor interest, and encourage more extended stays, thereby boosting the local economy. The project aims to create a structured and appealing tourism offer by fostering synergies between the resources of both regions.
- Unlocking the Untapped Potential of Digital Tools for Promoting Low-Density Territories: A Case Study of MirandelaPublication . Cunha, Manuela; Correia, Ricardo; Carvalho, Aida; Cunha, Carlos R.; Fontes, RutaDigital media have revolutionized promotional access, offering a universally accessible platform for dissemination. However, this study highlights a disparity in digital awareness and potential utilization between low-density and urban destinations. Using a case study, the research examines a specific low-density territory in northeastern Portugal and reveals that, despite certain efforts, the destination has not fully harnessed the resources offered by digital media. This raises concerns about its competitiveness compared to other destinations. In light of these findings, it is imperative to consider actions aimed at optimizing the potential of digital communication tools. By doing so, low-density territories can enhance their visibility, attractiveness, and competitiveness in the tourism landscape.
- Visitors’ Space–Time Behaviour at Parque Biológico De VinhaisPublication . Rodrigues, Isabel; Martins, Márcio Ribeiro; Esteves, Elsa Tavares; This research mainly aims to analyse the space–time behaviour of visitors to the Parque Biológico de Vinhais (PBV) in Portugal. The Park is an ecotourism destination in the Montesinho protected area, where environmental education and respect for nature are practised. Data was collected by tracking visitors using a smartphone app with GPS (Global Positioning System) technology. It was concluded that, on average, the duration of the visits was approximately 1 h and 10 min and that, during this time, the visitors were in motion for an average of 20.5 min and stationary for an average of 53.3 min. The average distance covered was 1209 m. As for the movements made by the visitors tracked, there was a greater concentration of visitors on the park’s central walkway. As they move away from the central walkway, the density of movements decreases. Understanding the space–time behaviour of visitors is fundamental for the intelligent management of attractions and tourist destinations, allowing us to develop market strategies that are more suited to demand. Several managerial and methodological contributions are presented in the conclusions.
