- An application framework for a situation-aware system support for smart spacesPublication . Santos, Arlindo; Rodrigues, HelenaDespite a considerable research e ort towards system support for smart spaces, in recent years we have been witnessing a growing perception about a persistent gap between the promises of the area and its real achievements. We are investigating a situation-aware system support for smart spaces that builds on a new set of assumptions and design principles, based on user-controlled associations between global services and local resources. The realisation of this concept raises important challenges across a model for global autonomous applications that enables them to integrate the functionality and resources of multiple situations. This research work aims at investigating such a model and evaluating the concept of situation-aware system support for smart spaces.
- The Inov@Douro cooperative network: shaping collaboration among Douro Region viticulture companies focusing tourismPublication . Cunha, Carlos R.; Peres, Emanuel; Morais, Raul; Reis, Manuel José Cabral dos SantosThis paper describes a business and technological model proposal, known as Inov@Douro, intended to support and to promote competitive and sustained precision agriculture practices in the Portuguese Douro Region. Our approach is based on a distributed cooperative network, tailored to meet the specific needs of viticulture enterprises which also explore tourism as a valuable national and international business source. Instead of focusing on operational issues, such as remote sensing and data transmission, among others, we present the Inov@Douro model from the knowledge generation point-of-view, intended to support the multidisciplinary concept of a cooperation approach among regional partners. As a result, this collaborative approach might be the most suited technological tool to promote precision agriculture sustainability practices based on a symbiotic cooperation with the tourism sector. The Inov@Douro model aims to represent a new working style for this unique region, where the concept of public and private information is a key feature to achieve the desired success as a knowledge network. As a guideline to attain the implementation of such a model, information technology and infrastructures tools are discussed in order to promote precision agriculture practices while giving valuable and dynamic tourist information to the general public.
- SAGA reloaded: towards a generic platform for developing cooperative applicationsPublication . Fonseca, Benjamim; Paredes, Hugo; Sousa, João Paulo; Martins, F. Mario; Carrapatoso, EuricoGroupware specification and development has always been a complex task, requiring special attention to issues such as notification of cooperative actions and ensuring consistency of shared data. Some years ago SAGA was developed as a framework to build groupware applications based on a set of core web services that provide the most common cooperative functionalities. Despite its potential, the last few years brought some technological developments that placed new challenges. This paper presents a new generation of the SAGA platform that adds to the original framework features that emerged recently, namely the regulation of social interaction, incorporation of new communication technologies, connectors to several external services and interaction environments, and the addition of contextual information.
- An evolutionary platform for the collaborative contextual composition of servicesPublication . Sousa, João Paulo; Fonseca, Benjamim; Carrapatoso, Eurico; Paredes, HugoBesides services traditionally available in wireless networks, new ones may be offered that transparently adjust and adapt to the user context. The user would have more choice and flexibility if not only could he use platform and third-party services, but also compose his own services in an ad-hoc way, making it available to other users, involving them collaboratively in the construction of a wide set of services. Moreover, collaboration among users can be fostered by the availability of awareness services in mobile environments that enable them to execute joint tasks and activities. This paper presents iCas, an architecture to create context-aware services on the fly, and discusses its main modules. Also a collaborative application scenario is briefly described.
- A service-oriented middleware for composing context aware mobile servicesPublication . Sousa, João Paulo; Fonseca, Benjamim; Carrapatoso, EuricoRecent advances in wireless networks and mobile devices have brought about new scenes for the provision of services to end-users. Besides traditional services, new ones may be provided that transparently adjust and adapt to the user context. The user would have more choice and flexibility if, besides using the services, he could also compose his own services in an ad-hoc way. This paper presents iCas, an architecture to create context-aware services on the fly and discusses its main components. Also an application scenario is briefly described.
- Proposal of a web information system to support cooperation networks: a functional architecture to share business opportunitiesPublication . Mendonça, Vítor; Varajão, João; Oliveira, Paula CristinaThe inter-organizational cooperation has established itself as a promising organizational model, enabling organizations to gain scale and simultaneously maintaining the flexibility necessary to constantly adapt to market demands ever-changing. This article, besides enhancing the strategic role of cooperation networks, intends to present the conceptual model and functional architecture of a Web Information System whose focus is the promotion of businesses networking. The proposed system will facilitate, based on the principles of cooperation networks, the establishment of cooperative arrangements between companies with complementary skills, allowing creating a web of companies oriented to customer loyalty within the networks, facilitating the sharing of information about customers and business opportunities.
- E-business maturity and information technology in Portuguese SMEsPublication . Gonçalves, Ramiro Manuel; Santos, Sónia Sousa; Morais, Elisabete PauloThe latest technological advances made over recent times led to a profound market change, characterized by increased competition. In order to be competitive, organizations have been forced to adapt themselves to this new reality, seeking innovative solutions permitting them to achieve lower costs, greater productivity and differentiation from competition. This work focuses the e-business maturity stages of Portuguese small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Our goal is to identify in which e-business maturity stage they are and explore the relationship between their e-business maturity and the technology they use.
- Exploring the constraints to the evolution of electronic business: the portuguese realityPublication . Morais, Elisabete Paulo; Pires, José Adriano; Gonçalves, Ramiro ManuelIt is imperative for an organization to identify potential constraints to e-business in order to minimize the risk derived from its e-business initiative. Hence, in this paper, we have used a maturity stage model (Stages Of Growth Model for e-business – SOGe) to identify the maturity stage of the biggest Portuguese enterprises and to report the findings of a study that sought to explore a range of constraints that the literature suggests influences e-business evolution, so that organizations could be better equipped in anticipating any difficulties while in progress through their e-business initiatives. Questionnaires were applied to investigate the research problem. It was administered to 1000 managing directors of the biggest (according to the amount of business) Portuguese enterprises. Results suggest that Portuguese enterprises had a positive evolution between 2005 and 2007, and that, in lower maturity stages, the constraints are more significant.
- An exploratory investigation of e-business constraints among large organizations in PortugalPublication . Morais, Elisabete Paulo; Pires, José Adriano; Gonçalves, Ramiro ManuelIt is well recognized that e-business supports all parts of an organization’s value chain, and offer valuable competitive advantages to firms. It is imperative for an organization to identify potential constraints to ebusiness in order to minimize the risk derived from its e-business initiative. Hence, in this paper, we explore a range of constraints that the literature suggests influences e-business evolution, so that organizations could be better equipped in anticipating any difficulties while in progress through their e-business initiatives. Thirteen hypotheses were formulated and tested. Questionnaires were applied to investigate the research problem. It was administered to 1000 managing directors of the biggest (according to the amount of business) Portuguese enterprises. Results suggest that organizational constraints are more critical, such as, conflict with traditional trading partners, conflict with traditional business and e-business initiatives, reengineering business processes and resistance to change, among other.
- E-Business maturity and information technologyPublication . Morais, Elisabete Paulo; Pires, José Adriano; Gonçalves, Ramiro ManuelMaturity models describe the maturing of the use of information systems in organizations. They are a useful framework to describe an organization’s current position as well as a range of possible position in the future in terms of their e-business maturity. The relationship between Information Technology (IT) and e-business maturity is examined. We used a model of e-business maturity, Stages Of Growth for e-business (SOGe) model, to put an organization in a maturity stage. In our survey we presented a set of technologies and we asked to enterprises which of them are implemented, in development, planned or inexistent. We concluded that there is a strongly correlation between IT implementation and the e-business maturity.
