- Prediction and experimental-determination of sequence lenght distributions of segmented polyester-polyurethanesPublication . Dias, Rolando; Barreiro, M.F.; Costa, Mário RuiPrediction and experimental determination of sequence lenght distributions of segmented polyester-polyurethanes
- Evaluation of soil test methods for the estimation of plant available phosphorus in the most representative soils from Portugal. 2. A greenhouse study with north-eastern soilsPublication . Arrobas, Margarida; Coutinho, JoãoThe major objective of soil tests for P is (i) to provide an index of the capacity of the soil to supply P to a crop and (ii) to group soils into classes for the purpose of making profitable fertiliser P recommendations (Kamprath et al. 1980).
- New developments in the kinetic modelling of complex non-linear polymerizationsPublication . Costa, Mário Rui; Dias, RolandoNew developments in the kinetic modelling of complex non-linear polymerizations
- Modeling and operation of a simulated moving bed for the separation of optical isomersPublication . Rodrigues, Alírio; Lu, Z.P.; Loureiro, José M.; Pais, Luís S.A model for predicting the steady state behavior of the simulated moving bed (SMB) is developed. SMB performance is characterized by purity, recovery, solvent consumption and productivity. The effect of switching time (rotation period), extract flowrate and section length on the SMB performance is discussed. A pilot plant for the separation of optical isomers is operated and tested with two systems: “Sandoz epoxide” and “bi-naphthol”.
- Influence of production factors on the characteristics of meat from ruminants in Mediterranean areaPublication . Teixeira, Alfredo; Delfa, Rafael; Alberti, P.The production systems or cattle sheep and goats in Mediterranean area and the factors linked with carcass and meat quality are discussed. The production systems in the mountain and semi-arid areas, typical of Mediterranean, are refereed. Finally a group or actions to be taken regarding the improvement of meat production from ruminants is suggested.
- Mirandes cattle breed: genetic base and breed improvementPublication . Sousa, Fernando Ruivo de; Fragata, AntónioThe "mirandês cattle breed has had a herd book since 1913 and the agricultural service has implemented a programme of genetic improvemment since the 70's. However, in spite of what has been expected, positive results weren't found on that programme and the "mirandês" cattle breed has gone into a decline. This paper analyses the strategies of several cattle breeder types and the genetic demographic structure of cattle within a community in northeast of Portugal. The present organization of the breed improvement, centered on cattle breeders of pure breed and on farms whith a great number of cows, does not permit genetic improvement. The alternative to the present situation consists of expanding the selection basis, integrating a conceptual level with all farmers. implementation of a process to work within the middle of a population of many breeders in the community.
- Mirandesa cattle breed: farm structure, management and marketingPublication . Fragata, António; Sousa, Fernando Ruivo deIn spite pof losses suffered in the last decades, the "Mirandesa" cattle breed still plays an important economic and social role and the carcass is famous for the quality of the "posta mirandesa", a very appreciated dish by the rich gastronomy of Portugal. The area studied is the highlands of Northeast of Portugal (Trás-os-Montes) which range from 700 to 1000 metres. The farming systems adopted by farmers are very low intensity animal production systems and the meat of the "Mirandesa" cattle breed has benn marketed as PDO since 1996, within the meaning of the EU rules adopted under the reform of the CAP. This paper reveals the results of soft systems approach to the farmers of the "Professional Association of Mirandesa Breed" which present a diversity of characteristics in what is referred to the types of family-farm systems, sources of family income, level of education and vocational training, animal management practices and supply chains of "Mirandesa" calves.
- Using remote sensing in landscape patterns evaluationPublication . Castro, José; Gómez Sal, AntonioThis project aims at recognising characteristic patterns ofland cover (landscape systems) in the Nonheast of Portugal (Bragnça) by applying a clustering procedure based in neighbouring analysis of remate sensing data. As an attempt to assess the evolution of this mountainous territory, information theory and ancillary maps were used to evaluate and interpret the results.
- Application of the regulations 2081 and 2082/92 in Portugal, their importance in the organization and valuation of the portuguese traditional productsPublication . Sousa, Fernando Ruivo deIn Portugal like in other Mediterranean Countries there is a group of food products which constitutes a main cultural heritage of this country due to their tradition, age, quality and importance concerning [0 consumption habits. For that reason it is important not only to keep that heritage hut al so transmit it to future generations and take advantage or the huge possibilities or some products to allow the developing or underprivileged regions where most or they come from.
- Mechanical olive harvesting systemsPublication . Almeida, Arlindo; Dias, António; Peça, José; Pinheiro, Anacleto; Santos, Luís S.S.; Reynolds, Domingos; Lopes, JoãoTrunk or bough shakers for the mechanical harvesting of olives can be complemented by collecting equipment now available: the inverted umbrella and the rolling canvas catching frame. The performance of both is compared with the traditional method of collecting olives on a canvas layed manually under the tree, the fruit being detached by shakers. Work rates and costs are compared under field trials in Portugal (Alentejo and Trás-os-Montes regions).
