- 3D Simulator based on simTwo to evaluate algorithms in micromouse competitionPublication . Eckert, Lucas; Piardi, Luis; Lima, José; Costa, Paulo Gomes da; Valente, António; Nakano, Alberto YoshiroRobotics competitions are increasing in complexity and number challenging the researchers, roboticists and enthusiastic to address the robot applications. One of the well-known competition is the micromouse where the fastest mobile robot to solve a maze is the winner. There are several topics addressed in this competition such as robot prototyping, control, electronics, path planning, optimization, among others. A simulation can be used to speed-up the development and testing algorithms but faces the gap between the reality in the dynamics behaviour. In this paper, an open source realistic simulator tool is presented where the dynamics of the robot, the slippage of the wheels, the friction and the 3D visualization can be found. The complete simulator with the robot model and an example is available that allow the users to test, implement and change all the environment. The presented results validate the proposed simulator.
- 3D Simulator with hardware-in-the-loop capability for the micromouse competitionPublication . Piardi, Luis; Eckert, Lucas; Lima, José; Costa, Paulo Gomes da; Valente, António; Nakano, Alberto YoshiroRobotics competitions are a way to challenge researchers, roboticists and enthusiastic to address robot applications. One of the well-known international competition is the Micromouse where the fastest mobile robot to solve a maze is the winner. There are several topics addressed in this competition such as robot prototyping, control, electronics, path planning, optimization, among others while keeping the size of the robot as small as possible. A simulation can be used to speed-up the development and testing algorithms but faces the gap between a simulation and reality, specially in the dynamics behaviour. There are some simulation environments that allow to simulate the Micromouse competition, but in this paper, an Hardware-in-the-loop simulator tool is presented where the simulated robot is controlled by the same microcontroller used by the robot. By this way, the developed algorithms are tested and validated with the limitations and constraints presented in the real hardware, such as memory and processing capabilities. The robot dynamics, the slippage of the wheels, the friction and the 3D visualization are present in the simulator. The presented results show that the same code and hardware controlling the simulated and the real robot identically.
- An implantable microsystem for electrical resistance and temperature measurements in cows with wireless capabilities suitable for reproductive managementPublication . Morais, R.; Valente, António; Almeida, José Carlos; Silva, Amélia M.; Soares, Salviano; Valentim, Ramiro; Azevedo, JorgeIn the cattle breeding industry, where artificial insemination techniques are employed, the successful detection of oestrus onset leads to considerable cost saving in herd management. One of the most reliable approaches is based on the determination of progesterone concentration in milk. However, these methods rely on the biosensor concept where a biological substrate is used in a chemical binding reaction to, directly or indirectly; produce some effect (electrical or light) that is used at the transducer level. These methods present several drawbacks concerning real-time measurements due to the complexity of the reactions involved and reagent/waste handling. Another approach is to combine measurements of electrical resistance of vaginal mucus and temperature to predict estrus. Using a low-power microsystem with wireless capabilities it is possible to take these measurements in-situ and more frequently. The proposed microsystem comprises a second-order delta-sigma modulator for analog to digital conversion and a class-E radio-frequency (RF) transmitter operating in the ISM-band of 433 MHz to transfer acquired data to a collar. Electrical resistance is measured by using a modified Wenner array and temperature by the on-chip temperature sensor. System (including battery and antenna) package is made of a tissue compatible material to allow implantation in the cow vulvar muscle.
- Automatic Fall Detection with Thermal CameraPublication . Kalbermatter, Rebeca B.; Franco, Tiago; Pereira, Ana I.; Valente, António; Soares, Salviano Pinto; Lima, JoséPeople are living longer, promoting new challenges in healthcare. Many older adults prefer to age in their own homes rather than in healthcare institutions. Portugal has seen a similar trend, and public and private home care solutions have been developed. However, age-related pathologies can affect an elderly person’s ability to perform daily tasks independently. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) is a domain that uses information and communication technologies to improve the quality of life of older adults. AI-based fall detection systems have been integrated into AAL studies, and posture estimation tools are important for monitoring patients. In this study, the OpenCV and the YOLOv7 machine learning framework are used to develop a fall detection system based on posture analysis. To protect patient privacy, the use of a thermal camera is proposed to prevent facial recognition. The developed system was applied and validated in the real scenario.

- Cooperative heterogeneous robots for autonomous insects trap monitoring system in a precision agriculture scenarioPublication . Berger, Guido; Teixeira, Marco; Cantieri, Álvaro R.; Lima, José; Pereira, Ana I.; Valente, António; Castro, Gabriel G.R.; Pinto, Milena F.The recent advances in precision agriculture are due to the emergence of modern robotics systems. For instance, unmanned aerial systems (UASs) give new possibilities that advance the solution of existing problems in this area in many different aspects. The reason is due to these platforms’ ability to perform activities at varying levels of complexity. Therefore, this research presents a multiple-cooperative robot solution for UAS and unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) systems for their joint inspection of olive grove inspect traps. This work evaluated the UAS and UGV vision-based navigation based on a yellow fly trap fixed in the trees to provide visual position data using the You Only Look Once (YOLO) algorithms. The experimental setup evaluated the fuzzy control algorithm applied to the UAS to make it reach the trap efficiently. Experimental tests were conducted in a realistic simulation environment using a robot operating system (ROS) and CoppeliaSim platforms to verify the methodology’s performance, and all tests considered specific real-world environmental conditions. A search and landing algorithm based on augmented reality tag (AR-Tag) visual processing was evaluated to allow for the return and landing of the UAS to the UGV base. The outcomes obtained in this work demonstrate the robustness and feasibility of the multiple-cooperative robot architecture for UGVs and UASs applied in the olive inspection scenario.
- Environment monitoring modules with fire detection capability based on IoT methodologyPublication . Brito, Thadeu; Azevedo, Beatriz Flamia; Valente, António; Pereira, Ana I.; Lima, José; Costa, Paulo Gomes daWorldwide, forests have been devastated by fires in recent years. Whe- ther by human intervention or for other reasons, the history of burned areas is increasing year after year, degrading fauna and flora. For this reason, it is vital to detect an early ignition so that firefighters can act quickly, reducing the impacts caused by forest fires. The proposed system aims to improve the nature monitoring and to assist the existing surveillance systems through Wireless Sensor Network. The network formed by the set of sensors has the potential to identify forest ignitions and, consequently, alerts the authorities through LoRaWAN communication. This work presents a prototype based on low-cost technology, which can be used in areas that require a high density of modules. Tests with a Wireless Sensor Network made up of nine prototypes demonstrate its effectiveness and robustness in terms of data transmission and collection. In this way, it is possible to apply this approach in Portuguese forests with a high level of forest fire risk, transforming them into Forests 4.0 concept. © 2021, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.
- Evaluation of LP-WAN technologies for fire forest detection systemsPublication . Adorno, Daniel; Soares, Salviano; Lima, José; Valente, AntónioLow Power Wide Area Networks (LP-WAN) are receiving a lot of attention because of their ability to communicate using radio frequency in long distances, with low-power consumption and low-cost devices. In this paper, we provide a comparison between the two LP-WAN platforms that are leading the market, the Sigfox and the LoRaWAN, based on the literature. Both platforms are analyzed considering the context of the forest fire detection and verification systems. Many aspects are being considered to identify which LP-WAN is more adequate to be used in this kind of systems, such as battery lifetime, coverage range, business model and costs. The comparison shows that both platforms are very similar in most of the aspects, although LoRaWAN is more flexible than Sigfox on the deployment and management of the network infrastructure. LoRaWAN allows customers to implement and manage their own infrastructure network, which is essential in systems which monitor vast forest areas.
- A LoRaWAN IoT system for smart agriculture for vine water status determinationPublication . Valente, António; Costa, Carlos M.; Pereira, Leonor Sousa; Soares, Bruno; Lima, José; Soares, SalvianoIn view of the actual climate change scenario felt across the globe, resource management is crucial, especially with regard to water. In this sense, continuous monitoring of plant water status is essential to optimise not only crop management but also water resources. Currently, monitoring of vine water status is done through expensive and time-consuming methods that do not allow continuous monitoring, which is especially inconvenient in places with difficult access. The aim of the developed work was to install three groups of sensors (Environmental, Plant and Soil) in a vineyard and connect them through LoRaWAN protocol for data transmission. The results demonstrate that the implemented system is capable of continuous data communication without data loss. The reduced cost and superior range of LoRaWAN compared to WiFi or Bluetooth is especially important for applications in remote areas where cellular networks have little coverage. Altogether, this methodology provides a remote, continuous and more effective method to monitor plant water status and is capable of supporting producers in more efficient management of their farms and water resources.
- Modelling of a vibration robot using localization ground truth assisted by aruco markersPublication . Matos, Diogo; Lima, José; Rohrich, Ronnier Frates; Oliveira, Andre Schneider; Valente, António; Costa, Pedro; Costa, Paulo Gomes daSimulators have been increasingly used on development and tests on several areas. They allow to speed up the development without damage and no extra costs. On realistic simulators, where kinematics play an important role, the modelling process should be imported for each component to be accurately simulated. Some robots are not yet modelled, as for example the Monera. This paper presents a model of a small vibration robot (Monera) that is acquired in a developed testbed. A localisation ground truth is used to acquire the position of the Monera with actuating it. Linear and angular speeds acquired from real experiments allow to validate the proposed methodology.
