Abstract(s)
In this paper the Development of Emotional Skills in Prison environment is the main area to which I intend to make a small contribution. My goal with this project is to know which coping strategies the inmate uses for his adaptation process; to evaluate the relationship between the level of Emotional Intelligence and criminal behavior, as well as to analyze his cognitive, affective and behavioral abilities. A set of sessions was thus prepared, that I realized, with 14 male inmates of the Prison Establishment of Bragança, with ages between 22 and 42. After the sessions were finished, a questionnaire was made with the objective of analyzing the inmates' levels of Emotional Intelligence. To help me in this investigation I organized three research hypotheses in which the first one refers to "The higher the educational qualifications the higher the level of Emotional Intelligence?", second to "The primary inmates tend to enter the prison system with higher Emotional Intelligence skills?" and finally to "Those who are integrated in stable households tend to have better Emotional Intelligence skills?", the data were thus analyzed to understand whether or not the answers corroborated the research hypotheses. Regarding the main conclusions of the project as a whole, it seems important to me to highlight that because my population sample was small I could not find significant results in the analyzed data which made my data not corroborate with my research questions, even though in some situations there were some differences between the variables in question and the level of emotional intelligence of each inmate. It was thus possible to ascertain from the analysed data that 90% of inmates have a high level of emotional intelligence and 10% of inmates have a low level of emotional intelligence. Even so, this issue of emotional competence in prison environment still has a lot of work to do.
