Abstract(s)

The aim of this study was to measure the effect of pasture vs. indoors rearing on the content of the saturated fatty acids in lamb meat, using meta-analysis. A total of seventeen studies concerning the effect of access to pasture in lamb rearing systems on this quality trait were selected. Based on the high heterogeneity between studies, a random-effects model for assessing the data was applied. The kind of pasture (pure vs. supplemented) was considered as covariate. The model indicated that pasture rearing increased (P<0.05) the total amount of the saturated fatty acids in lamb meat. Lambs grazing pure pasture displayed increased (P<0.01) saturation of the intramuscular lipids, when compared to the animals receiving supplements such as concentrates or milk. Concerning the examined trait, the results of this study suggest certain negative effect of pasture rearing on the healthy quality of lamb meat.
