Abstract(s)
This study presents the feasibility of water efficiency in the Santa Maria School Center of Bragança city. To this end, two options to reduce the consumption of potable water are proposed and is made a technical and economic feasibility study for 5 scenarios. In the first option (2 scenarios) it is proposed to replace water using devices such as taps. In the second option (3 scenarios) the use of rainwater is considered. It was also analysed the change of irrigation behaviors by alteration of water intensity or irrigation periods. Both options can be technically and economically implemented, leading to a significant reduction in water invoice. In the option 1, replacing existing taps by water-efficient taps, it is estimated annual water savings until 46.3% and return periods of the investment until 2 years. In 15 years cumulative savings of €74,072.02 can be achieved. On the other hand, in the option 2, using a reservoir with a volume of 15 m3, it is estimated that 569.8 m3 (85%) of total rainwater can be used. Combining the scenario of using rainwater to flushing cisterns, the installation of efficient taps of 1.8 L/min or 5.0 L/min, it is estimated annual water savings of 75.6% and 64.5%, return periods of the investment of 4 and 5 years, reaching cumulative savings of €97,257.07 and €79,827.66, respectively, in 15 years. Thus, the proposed measures for the efficient use of water in the School Center may contribute to reduce the risks of water scarcity in the region and be an economic advantage for the Municipality.
