Abstract(s)
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze two community intervention projects carried out in cities in the northern interior of Portugal and to analyze their strategies, obstacles and impacts on participants. This work arose after the author was professionally involved in one of the projects that was analyzed, with the personal and professional objective of improving the community intervention project in which he is involved in order to evolve professionally and improve the quality of life of the participants with whom he deals daily. The two community intervention projects studied in this dissertation are the “Dar Vida aos Anos Envelhecendo” project developed by the Municipality of Boticas and the “Vila Mais Perto” project developed by the Nossa Senhora do Extremo Social Center, in Vila Pouca de Aguiar, whose objectives are to promote the independence of participants, their social participation, physical well-being and digital training. In fact, population aging is an increasingly important challenge and should be seen not as a problem, but rather as an opportunity to develop and improve intervention techniques to improve and transform population aging into active aging. Far from the main urban centres, in addition to the lack of services and social isolation, these are just some of the problems that these groups face. By understanding and working on these problems, among others, community interventions can become promising alternatives to improve the quality of life of the elderly. A mixed and exploratory study methodology was adopted, using a questionnaire survey. Semi-structured interviews were also implemented. These data collection instruments were applied to users of these projects and their respective coordinators. The research carried out highlights the importance of strengthening local social networks, of improving the quality of life of the elderly population in rural contexts, highlighting the opportunities that community interventions can offer, showing the type of needs that the elderly have most, but also showing the main challenges encountered in this type of intervention.
