Abstract(s)
Mental health has been receiving more attention in recent times, more and more people are diagnosed with some type of mental illness, economically speaking the costs of these pathologies were around 2.5 billion dollars in 2010, thus representing more costs than chronic diseases such as cancer or diabetes and these estimates are expected to double by 2030. Schizophrenia, in turn, is one of the most common psychiatric diseases in the world and even after years of research there are still gaps in the pharmacological treatment of the symptoms presented, thus transferring a great responsibility to the rehabilitation of these patients. Virtual reality (VR) has been considered as a promising rehabilitation method for some psychiatric disorders. Thus, it is extremely important to analyse the impact of these interventions, as well as to understand the level of knowledge of future professionals on the subject. Objectives: To analyse and compare the effect of VR on the rehabilitation of negative symptoms of the schizophrenia spectrum. METHODS: Two studies were conducted. The first was a systematic literature review, where searches were conducted between July and August 2021 in the Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed databases. The second study was a cross-sectional descriptive observational study, responses were collected through a survey between 06 and 25 January 2022. The sample population was adults and students of the Polytechnic Institute of BraganƧa. RESULTS: In the systematic review, the searches resulted in 201 records, but only 4 met the eligibility criteria. The major limitation of this part of the work was the small number of studies that met all the pre-established criteria, but it was still possible to observe the positive effect of the intervention with VR on the negative symptomatology of schizophrenia. In the second study, the answers of 216 students from three courses of the Polytechnic Institute of BraganƧa were collected, static analyses were performed and variables were compared in order to assess their perceptions and knowledge about VR, as well as their beliefs about mental disorders. CONCLUSIONS: The virtual reality applied to the rehabilitation of negative symptomatology in schizophrenia spectrum disorder showed to be an intervention with a huge potential with medium to large effects, however, students showed little knowledge on the subject and some concern about the harmfulness of the technology, but showed belief in the potential of the technique and in the patients' ability to receive interventions with this technology
