Sustentabilidade empresarial em São Tomé e Príncipe: o papel da agência de promoção de comércio e investimento

Este estudo analisou o nível de adoção de práticas de sustentabilidade empresarial em diferentes setores de atividade em São Tomé e Príncipe, com especial atenção ao papel da Agência de Promoção do Comércio e Investimento (APCI) na promoção do desenvolvimento sustentável. A investigação baseou-se na aplicação de inquéritos a empresas dos setores agrícola, industrial, comercial, de serviços e outros, permitindo uma caracterização detalhada quanto à sua idade, dimensão, nível de sensibilização, tipos de apoio recebidos e principais dificuldades enfrentadas na implementação de práticas sustentáveis. Os resultados revelam assimetrias significativas entre os setores, com destaque para o setor de serviços, que demonstrou maior grau de sensibilização e adoção de práticas sustentáveis. Por outro lado, observou-se uma perceção predominantemente negativa por parte das empresas quanto ao desempenho da APCI na promoção da sustentabilidade. Neste estudo também se analisou a estratégia da APCI para o contributo da sustentabilidade, tendo por base a observação direta e a entrevista semiestruturada ao diretor da APCI. O estudo contribui para a compreensão dos desafios e oportunidades no contexto empresarial são-tomense, oferecendo contributo para a formulação de políticas públicas mais eficazes e alinhadas com os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS).
This study examined the level of adoption of corporate sustainability practices across different economic sectors in São Tomé and Príncipe, with particular emphasis on the role of the Agency for the Promotion of Trade and Investment (APCI) in advancing sustainable development. The research was based on surveys conducted with companies operating in the agricultural, industrial, commercial, service, and other sectors, allowing for a detailed characterization in terms of age, size, awareness levels, types of support received, and the main challenges encountered in implementing sustainable practices. The results revealed significant disparities among sectors, with the service sector standing out for its higher degree of awareness and implementation of sustainable practices. Conversely, a predominantly negative perception was observed among companies regarding APCI's performance in promoting sustainability. This study also analysed APCI's strategy for contributing to sustainability, based on direct observation and a semistructured interview with the director of APCI. This study contributes to a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the São Toméan business context, providing insights for the formulation of more effective public policies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
