| dc.description.abstract | O envolvimento dos cidadãos nos processos de combate às alterações climáticas e recuperação da biodiversidade e dos ecossistemas tornou-se um dos maiores desafios das sociedades modernas. Contudo, o interesse pelas questões ambientais não se tem generalizado de forma tão profunda, comprometida e universal como seria desejável. O estudo das atitudes face ao ambiente tem-se tornado, por isso, muito atual, em especial na educação dos jovens. É, assim, crucial que os investigadores tenham mais informação que permita entender em que medida as pessoas (des)valorizam os problemas ambientais, e por que o fazem. Mais e melhor conhecimento dos fatores internos e externos que influenciam a formação e diferenciação das atitudes face ao ambiente permitirá desenvolver programas educativos que contribuam para aumentar a intensidade e persistência das mesmas e melhorar a relação dos indivíduos com o ambiente. A presente investigação teve, assim, como objetivo procurar respostas para o seguinte problema de investigação: Como se caracterizam as atitudes dos jovens face ao ambiente, como se relacionam as dimensões das mesmas com a idade e como se diferenciam em função do sexo? Encontrar respostas para este problema poderá fornecer informação relevante para melhorar a educação ambiental e a educação para o desenvolvimento sustentável em todos os níveis de ensino e na formação de professores. Foi utilizada uma metodologia quantitativa, com realização de análises correlacionais e diferenciais. A amostra foi constituída por 1281 estudantes portugueses, de ambos os sexos, com idade entre 12 e 18 anos, do 7.º, 9.º e 11.º anos de escolaridade. O inquérito incluiu dois questionários, organizados com recurso a escalas com respostas estruturadas em seis níveis, adaptados para a população portuguesa, com utilização dos seguintes instrumentos: “Environmental Attitude Inventory” (EAI-24) e “Escala de Atitudes dos Jovens Face ao Ambiente” (EAJFA). Os resultados permitiram encontrar, conforme o esperado, relações significativas entre as atitudes face ao ambiente e a variável sexo, favoráveis aos alunos do sexo feminino. A idade corelacionou-se significativamente apenas com algumas das dimensões das atitudes face ao ambiente e, nestas, favorável aos alunos mais novos numas dimensões e aos alunos mais velhos noutras. | dc.description.abstract | The involvement of citizens in the processes of combating climate change and recovering biodiversity and ecosystems has become one of the greatest challenges of modern societies. However, interest in environmental issues has not become as widespread as we would like. The study of attitudes towards the environment has therefore become urgent, especially in the education of young people. It is, therefore, crucial that researchers have more information to understand the extent to which people disregard environmental problems, and why. More and better knowledge of the internal and external factors that influence the formation and differentiation of attitudes towards the environment will allow the development of educational programs that contribute to increase the intensity and persistence of attitudes and improve the relationship of individuals with the environment. The present investigation has, therefore, the objective to search for answers to the following research problem: “What are the dimensions of young people's attitudes towards the environment, how are they related to age and how do they differ according to sex?”. Finding answers to this problem can provide relevant information to improve environmental education and education for sustainable development at all levels of education and in teacher training. A quantitative methodology was used, making correlational and differential analyzes. The sample consisted of 1281 students of both sexes, aged between 12 and 18 years old, from the 7th, 9th and 11th years of schooling. The survey included two questionnaires, organized using scales with structured answers at six levels, adapted to the Portuguese population, using the following instruments: “Environmental Attitude Inventory” (EAI-24) and “Escala de Atitudes dos Jovens Face ao Ambiente” (EAJFA). The results showed, as expected, significant relationships between attitudes towards the environment and sex, favorable to female students. Age showed a significant correlation only with some of the dimensions of attitudes towards the environment and, in these, favorable to younger students in some dimensions and to older students in others.
