Resumo(s)

During the first half of the twentieth century, particularly in the 1930s and 1940s, the Portuguese dictatorial regime established a new ideological framework, a new public image, and innovative methods for promoting itself both domestically and internationally. This study examines the translation of speeches delivered by António de Oliveira Salazar into English during the 1930s—a period marked by the regime's intensified propaganda efforts, facilitated by the establishment of an official entity dedicated to such activities. The primary objectives of this research are to explore the processes involved in translating these speeches into a foreign language and to analyze the translator's approach to a collection of speeches compiled in the volume Doctrine and Action, published in 1939. Contrary to Venuti's (1995) depiction of the translator as an "invisible" figure throughout history, the translator in this specific case was both conspicuous and influential. Through unexplained omissions and other textual modifications, the translator significantly shortened the target text compared to the source text. Additionally, the translator employed a range of strategies that underscored his presence throughout the 23 speeches included in the volume. This research will uncover the liberties exercised by the translator in handling a text that the regime likely regarded as authoritative. Furthermore, it seeks to identify the motivations behind the translator’s decisions, particularly in an era when such deviations were prohibited within the context of Portuguese translation practices, as the study will demonstrate.
