Abstract(s)
The revision of European waste management policies, introduced by the regulatory instruments as part of the European Circular Economy Package, has made a structural overhaul of urban waste collection and recovery models unavoidable, in which biowaste plays a key role. Faced with this emerging challenge and in order to define strategies for intervention in the Municipality of Trancoso, the present project main objective was to define actions for biowaste management, in an effort to meet the deadlines and the goals established by current regulations through the definition of proposal for the implementation of management systems for selective collection and valorization of biowaste. This study unfolds in several stages: i) geographical and sociodemographic characterization of the municipality, ii) assessment of the current biowaste management situation in the municipality, iii) comparative analysis of different biowaste collection and recovery solutions, iv) development and evaluation of strategies for biowaste recovery, and v) implementation of measures in the territory. In view of the geographical characteristics of the municipality of Trancoso, the technical solutions defined for the management of organic waste consist on methods for collection (proximity and door-to-door) and recovery at origin (domestic and community composting). After analyzing different variables, the most valid action model is proposed considering: proximity collection for domestic producers in the most urbanized and populated centres, namely Trancoso and Vila Franca das Naves; dedicated door-to-door collection for residents and non-domestic producers of the historical centre of Trancoso; and on-source valorization by domestic and community composting in the other population groups (more dispersed and rural territories).
