Social media has a significant impact on the dynamic dissemination of information and knowledge, especially in the educational context. In recent years, there has been rapid growth in the use of social media across all sectors of society. In the Mozambican context, this phenomenon intensified even further during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, when schools were forced to find ways to continue teaching remotely. This article seeks to understand the role of social networks in teaching and learning, considering aspects such as collaboration, content sharing, recommendation mechanisms, and social interaction. Methodologically, aiming to capture perceptions about the role of social networks, the research follows a qualitative approach, and the data collection technique will be supported by a literature review and semi-structured interviews. Throughout the discussion of the chapters, it was possible to verify that the various authors who addressed the topic, as well as the interviewees, reinforce the perception that social networks play a dual role in educational life, combining entertainment and learning opportunities. However, concerns about the quality and reliability of the information shared, and the guarantee of security and privacy for users are highlighted. The research also found that WhatsApp is the most used social network for sharing relevant information and content, Google Classroom is the tool used for managing and sharing school materials and assignments, and Facebook is used, but not very much in an educational context.
