Abstract(s)
When the availability or capacity to access the food needed for an active and healthy life are compromised there is food insecurity. It consists in a limitation to obtain food due to lack of resources, as a result of an economic, social and cultural context that does not respect the human dignity. Objective: To study the relationship between unemployment and the level of food insecurity in Portuguese family house- holds. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, inferential, cross-sec- tional study was developed. The questionnaire “Instrumento para la medición de la inseguridad alimentaria a nivel del hogar” was adapted to Portuguese and used in 263 unemployed individuals in the districts of Braganza, Vila Real, Viseu and Oporto. Results: The level of food insecurity is 75,3 % in households with children and 63,1 % in the other households. The district of Oporto is the one with a higher level of food insecurity (86,8 %), followed by Braganza district (73,6 %). The Vila Real (55,0%) and Viseu (55,4 %) districts have a lower level of food insecurity. The length of the unemployment situation is significantly asso- ciated with food insecurity (p = 0,000). Age (p = 0,000), per capita income (p = 0,000) and schooling (p = 0,000) are also significantly associated with food insecurity. Conclusion: It was verified that households with children have greater exposure to food insecurity. Age and time of unemploy- ment are directly proportional to food insecurity, contrary to income and education that are inversely proportional.
