Abstract(s)
During a survey carried out for five years (2000-2005) in several villages from the northeastern Portugal, 400 vascular taxa, and both wild and cultivated, usually considered in several categories of use, have been inventoried and registered in an ethnobotanical catalogue. Moreover, every plant mentioned as well as its use and preparations are described. Consented interviews with individuals from the villages were conducted in order to gather ethnobotanical information, to assess the importance of local flora in daily rural tasks and to find out if there are different perceptions and plant knowledge according to gender and ages. A study case in 2006-2007 confirmed the main issues already reported and highlighted the link between heritage and knowledge in a changing rural society. Voucher specimens of all plants discussed and encountered were collected, identified and stored in the Escola Superior Agrária de Bragança Herbarium (BRESA). The related information is organized in a FileMaker Pro database. Some examples of the most important taxa of the category medicinal are presented and the main uses reported are synthesized as well as traditional knowledge associated with their use.
