Abstract(s)
Despite the conquests already achieved to reduce the gap between men and women in the labor market and in society, it is still necessary to consider that much still needs to be done for women to reach the same level of social and professional valorization that men have. In this sense, the present study, whose theme is Role(s) of women in society: Perceptions of the students of an institution of higher education, started from the following question-problem how can we sensitize the students of an institution of higher education to this problem by listening to their beliefs? In view of this question, we defined the following objectives: (i) To know the perceptions of students from a higher education institution about the role of women in society; (ii) To alert students from a higher education institution about the importance of women's role in society; (iii) To understand how gender issues influence the lives of students from a higher education institution; and finally, (iv) To increase knowledge about gender (un)equality, reinforcing women's role in society. The study is mixed, quantitative and qualitative in nature, using the questionnaire survey as a data collection technique. The survey, with closed and open questions, was applied online and filled out by respondents of both genders in a college of education in northeastern mainland Portugal. The sample was of a non-probabilistic nature, by convenience. Thus, from a population of 1995 students enrolled in the 2021/2022 academic year in the higher education institution (HEI) where the study was conducted, 218 students answered the survey. We emphasize that the number of students attending classes is smaller than the number of enrolled students. The survey was made known to all students of the courses in operation at this HEI, namely 8 Professional Higher Technical Courses (CTeSP), 10 Bachelor's degrees, and 10 Master's degrees. For the data analysis, we used descriptive and inferential analysis for the closed-ended questions and content analysis for the open-ended questions. The main results reveal that higher education students at the institution where the study was conducted perceive the existence of social inequalities (in several dimensions) between women and men and most of them advocate the enhancement of women's role in society.
