Abstract(s)
qualquer desporto extracurricular.
Studies in pre-school children are very important as they allow the identification of behaviours and patterns at early ages. Objectives: With this in mind, the aim of the present study was to characterize the current situation regarding sedentary habits, the type of transportation used to and from the kindergarten, sports practice and hours of sleep of pre-school children in the city of Bragança. Method: The sample consisted of 161 children aged between 2 and 5 (4,08±0,85 years), of both sexes. Anthropometric assessments were carried out while the remaining variables were collected through questionnaires and later statistically analysed. Results: Most children (71,2% on weekdays and 90,7% at the weekends) had more screen time than recommended for their age group. The means of transportation more commonly used to and from the kindergarten was the car. The majority of children (69,5%) slept 10 or more hours daily, which is considered to be within the recommendations for their age range. Regarding the practice of sports, it was found that most children (67%) do not perform any type of extracurricular sport. No significant differences were observed between sexes in the analysed variables. Conclusions: Children of both sexes spend, on average, more time than recommended for their age group in front of the television or playing computer/tablet games. On the other hand, most of the children under study have an adequate number of hours of sleep per day for their age. Nevertheless, only a minority plays any type of extracurricular sport.
